Which Dark Horse to choose

Our verdict · Sarah Whitmore

  • For regular track days: the Dark Horse with the Handling Package, which brings the Trofeo tyres, wider wheels and the rear wing.
  • For road use with a manual: the standard Dark Horse; the MagneRide dampers and Brembo brakes are already included.
  • For the most power without moving to a GTD: the Dark Horse SC from 2026.
  • For a lower price: the Mustang GT, which keeps the same V8 with 11–15 kW (14–20 hp) less in the US.

The Dark Horse is listed with the other modern Mustangs in the muscle car guide and in the ranking of the most powerful muscle cars. The comparison tool sets it against other modern muscle cars.

The Ford Mustang Dark Horse is the most powerful naturally aspirated version of the seventh-generation Mustang, sold from the 2024 model year. Its 5.0-litre Coyote V8 produces 373 kW (500 hp) in the US; Ford called it the most powerful 5.0-litre V8 it had ever built. Brembo brakes, extra cooling and MagneRide dampers are standard. From 2026 the range also includes the supercharged Dark Horse SC with 593 kW (795 hp).

The Dark Horse sits at the top of the Ford Mustang range, above the GT and below the Mustang GTD.

A new name for the seventh generation

Ford presented the seventh-generation Mustang on 14 September 2022 at the North American International Auto Show, at an event called "The Stampede". The Dark Horse series was announced the same evening. According to Ford, a dedicated team worked on the car for more than three years. The company described it as the first new Mustang performance name since the 2001 Bullitt. Joel Piaskowski, Ford's global design director, explained the badge: the horse faces forward, "coming from the shadows head-on to win".

The name also covers a family of track cars. The Dark Horse S is a stripped track-day car with an FIA-certified safety cage, a race seat and a data display. The Dark Horse R, unveiled in July 2023, adds race serialisation, seam welding and a fuel cell. It was built for the single-make IMSA Ford Mustang Challenge, which started in 2024. Both are for track use only.

Engine and gearboxes

The Dark Horse uses the fourth-generation 5.0-litre Coyote V8 of the Mustang GT with its own crankshaft and the forged connecting rods first used in the 567 kW (760 hp) Shelby GT500. A dual throttle-body intake feeds it through the open "nostrils" in the grille.

Version Power Torque
Mustang GT (US) 358 kW (480 hp) at 7,150 rpm; 362 kW (486 hp) with active exhaust 567 Nm (418 lb-ft)
Mustang Dark Horse (US) 373 kW (500 hp) at 7,250 rpm 567 Nm (418 lb-ft) at 4,900 rpm
Mustang GT (Europe) 334 kW (454 PS) at 7,150 rpm 538 Nm
Mustang Dark Horse (Europe) 338 kW (459 PS) at 7,250 rpm 538 Nm
Dark Horse SC (from 2026) 593 kW (795 hp) 895 Nm (660 lb-ft)

The six-speed Tremec TR-3160 manual is standard, with a 3D-printed titanium gear knob and its own transmission oil cooler. The optional ten-speed automatic has paddle shifters; Wikipedia gives a 3.55:1 final drive. The German magazine Autonotizen quotes 334 kW (453 PS) and 540 Nm for its European test car, slightly different from the Wikipedia figures, and measured 0–100 km/h in 5.2 seconds.

Brakes, cooling and chassis

Much of the difference from the GT is hardware for track use rather than power. Ford lists:

  • Brakes: six-piston Brembo calipers at the front with 13.9-inch (353 mm) discs, cooled through NACA ducts.
  • Cooling: an auxiliary engine oil cooler, a rear axle cooler and a lighter radiator with more powerful fans.
  • Chassis: unique tuning, a larger rear anti-roll bar, heavy-duty front dampers, a Ford Performance strut-tower brace and K-brace, and a Torsen limited-slip differential.
  • Dampers: MagneRide as standard, monitoring wheel movement 1,000 times per second.
  • Tyres: Pirelli P Zero PZ4 on 19 × 9.5-inch front and 19 × 10-inch rear wheels.

The optional Handling Package adds Pirelli Trofeo tyres on wider 19 × 10.5 and 19 × 11-inch wheels, stiffer springs and thicker anti-roll bars. Its fixed rear wing has a Gurney flap similar to the one on the Ford GT. Ford said this package gives the most downforce of any new Mustang. Carbon Revolution carbon-fibre wheels were announced as a later option, the first on a Mustang outside the Shelby GT350 and GT500.

Design and interior

The Dark Horse has darkened LED headlights, a gloss black grille with trapezoidal openings, high-gloss "fangs" in the lower bumper, side skirts, a diffuser and darkened quad tailpipes. Its badge is the first forward-facing horse on a Mustang, in a dark anodised finish, and Blue Ember metallic paint is unique to the model. The Appearance Package adds blue Brembo calipers.

Inside, the thick, flat-bottomed steering wheel is trimmed in suede with Bright Indigo Blue stitching, and the seatbelts are blue. A 12.4-inch digital instrument cluster and a 13.2-inch SYNC 4 centre screen sit behind a single piece of glass. The B&O sound system has 12 speakers and a subwoofer.

Dark Horse SC and the wider range

Ford revealed the Dark Horse SC on 15 January 2026. Wikipedia describes it as the spiritual successor to the sixth-generation Shelby GT500. A supercharged 5.2-litre Predator V8 with 593 kW (795 hp) and 895 Nm drives the rear wheels through a seven-speed Tremec dual-clutch gearbox. A convertible followed at the Woodward Dream Cruise on 15 August 2026.

Above both sits the Mustang GTD, revealed on 17 August 2023. It has a supercharged 5.2-litre V8 with 608 kW (815 hp), an eight-speed dual-clutch transaxle and a top speed of 325 km/h (202 mph). The GTD is not counted in the 1CARS muscle car list.
