The Denza D9 is a full-size luxury MPV from BYD's premium brand Denza, sold in China since August 2022 as a plug-in hybrid (DM-i) and as a battery-electric car. It is 5,250 mm long on a 3,110 mm wheelbase and has become the brand's best-selling model: the 100,000th D9 was built in September 2023 and the 250,000th in June 2025. Exports began in Asia in 2024, and the ADAC catalogue now lists a German plug-in hybrid version.
Denza began as a joint venture between BYD and Daimler. The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding on 1 March 2010 and founded Shenzhen BYD Daimler New Technology on 27 May 2010, with equal shares. Its first car, the Denza EV, went on sale in selected Chinese cities in late 2014 and was renamed Denza 500 in 2018, but annual sales stayed below 5,000 until 2021. Mercedes-Benz cut its stake to 10 % in December 2021 and handed the rest to BYD in September 2024, making Denza a wholly owned BYD brand. Sales then jumped from 9,803 in 2022 to 127,840 in 2023 and 157,134 in 2025, largely thanks to the D9. Denza launched in Europe at an event in Milan in April 2025, starting with the Z9 GT. The parent company's history is told in the article on BYD.

Powertrains and performance

| DM-i, German market (ADAC) | AWD | 58.5 kWh | 260 kW (353 PS) | - | 8.6 s | 210 km electric WLTP |
The DM-i system pairs a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine of 102 kW and 231 Nm with a 170 kW, 340 Nm front motor; the all-wheel-drive version adds a 45 kW rear motor. Total ranges for the hybrid are Chinese claims that combine fuel and battery; across the DM-i range they run from 945 to 1,040 km, with up to 190 km on electricity on the NEDC cycle. China's CLTC cycle is more generous than WLTP, which is why the EV 620 drops from 620 to 520 km. The plug-in hybrid charges at up to 80 kW DC, the EV at up to 166 kW. In China the EV has charging flaps on both rear wings.
For the German DM-i the ADAC lists a larger 58.5 kWh battery, 260 kW (353 PS), a top speed of 180 km/h and DC charging at up to 559 kW, with 80 % in nine minutes on a suitable charger. These figures belong to a newer battery and drive generation than the first Chinese cars.

Updates: 2024 and 2025 model years
The March 2024 update for the 2024 model year brought automatic soft-closing doors, physical buttons on the steering wheel, a heated steering wheel on all trims and an on-board refrigerator. In December 2024 the 2025 model year moved the DM-i to BYD's fifth-generation hybrid system and made lidar and the BAS 3.0+ assistance package standard, with a new Luxury trim.
Export markets
The D9 went abroad through Asia first. Hong Kong received it on 24 June 2024 as the first right-hand-drive market, followed by Cambodia, the first ASEAN country, in July 2024, Singapore in October and Thailand in November 2024. Indonesia came in January 2025 and Malaysia in February 2025, then Brunei, the Philippines and Australia in early 2026. In Indonesia the brand is called Danza from 1 October 2026, and a locally assembled D9 from the Subang plant was launched on 14 October 2026. For Germany the ADAC catalogue shows a D9 DM-i with a market start in December 2026.

Space and seating
With 3,110 mm between the axles, the D9 is longer between the wheels than many large saloons. The ADAC gives seven seats and a boot of 430 litres behind the third row, rising to 2,310 litres with the rear seats folded to the roof. Lidar-based assistance has been standard since the 2025 model year.

Who the D9 suits and its rivals
The D9 is built for passengers more than for drivers: three rows, a long wheelbase and comfort features such as the refrigerator. The plug-in hybrid suits buyers who drive long distances without reliable fast charging, while the EV makes sense where charging is easy. In Europe its natural rivals are the Toyota Alphard and the electric Mercedes-Benz EQV. The size comparison tool shows how its 5,250 mm compare with these vans, and more Denza models are in the Denza catalogue.
