Which big Audi to choose: Q9, Q7 or a rival
Our verdict · Felix Hartmann
The Audi Q7 remains the more compact seven-seater. Compared with the Q7, the Q9 adds about 25 cm of length and 15 cm of wheelbase, plus the power doors and the larger glass roof. Versions of both can be checked side by side in our car comparison. The coupé-styled Audi Q8 is built in the same Bratislava plant, which has made the Q7 since 2005 and the Q8 since 2018.
Direct rivals are the BMW X7 and the Mercedes-Benz GLS. In the UK, Motoring Research also compared the Q9's price with the entry-level Range Rover. Buyers in Europe who want petrol or plug-in power have no confirmed Q9 option yet, because only the diesel was announced for the European launch. The brand's long story is in our history of Audi.
The Audi Q9 is a full-size, three-row SUV and Audi's largest production model. Audi presented it on 29 July 2026, opened German order books at the end of that month and announced deliveries from November 2026. It is built in Bratislava, Slovakia. At launch in Europe it has a 3.0-litre V6 TDI mild hybrid with 220 kW (299 PS), priced from €108,400 in Germany in July 2026. At 5,310 mm long it sits above the Q7 and competes with the BMW X7 and Mercedes-Benz GLS.

Engines and drivetrain
The European launch engine is a 3.0-litre V6 TDI with 220 kW (299 PS) and 630 Nm. A 48-volt starter-generator adds up to 18 kW and 370 Nm for short bursts of acceleration. An electrically driven compressor builds up to 3.6 bar of absolute boost pressure within 1.2 seconds. Power goes through an eight-speed torque-converter automatic to permanent quattro all-wheel drive. CARS24 quotes 7.4–8.0 l/100 km combined.

Size, seats and doors
The Q9 is 5.31 m long and 2.21 m wide. CARS24 reports that it is almost 25 cm longer than the Q7, with 15 cm more between the axles. All seven seats in three rows are electrically adjustable. The six-seat layout replaces the middle bench with two individual electric seats; in the UK it is a £5,000 option (September 2026, about €5,800) called the Lounge package on the Vorsprung.
The doors open and close electrically, up to 90 degrees, with obstacle detection and a soft-close function, and they can be operated from an app. Audi says it is the first time it has fitted such doors. Above the cabin is a glass roof of more than 1.5 m², the largest Audi has used, with optional switchable tint in nine segments.

Chassis
Adaptive air suspension is standard, with variable damping and 90 mm of height adjustment. For getting in and out, the body lowers by 62 mm. Rear-axle steering with up to 5 degrees is optional, and a sportier air-suspension setup is also offered. The brakes use internally ventilated discs of 400 mm at the front and 350 mm at the rear, and wheel sizes run from 20 to 23 inches. Foam inserts in the 22- and 23-inch tyres reduce road noise.
Cabin, screens and assistance
The driver faces a curved OLED panel that combines an 11.9-inch instrument display and a 14.5-inch touchscreen. A 12.3-inch passenger display with a privacy mode is standard. The software is based on Android Automotive OS, adapted by Audi. Bang & Olufsen sound is available; the top system has 22 speakers. CARS24 reports curved OLED tail lights with 512 segments, which Audi calls a first for a production car.
Among the assistance systems, the emergency assistant can now steer the car onto the hard shoulder on motorways and call for help. Audi has also announced hands-free driving at up to 130 km/h on approved roads in the United States, Canada and Germany.
