Renault Clio 4 used: which engine to pick and which TCe to avoid

By Updated 9 min read

Clio IV

Verdict

A post-2016 Clio 4 with the 0.9 TCe or the 1.5 dCi and a manual gearbox is a sensible, cheap supermini at around €3,900 median (Nov 2026). Avoid the 1.2 TCe 120 built before July 2016, which can burn oil, and be careful with the EDC automatic. Check that the brake hose and rear seat recalls were done.

Used: AutoScout24 asking prices in eight EU countries, November 2026, whole generation (10th-90th percentile). New: ADAC list price in Germany for the cheapest version at launch. A real price depends on year, mileage, engine and condition.

The Clio 4 is one of the cheapest ways into a five-star supermini built after 2012, with a median asking price under €4,000 in November 2026. The engine decides whether that is a bargain. The 1.2 TCe 120 built before July 2016 can burn oil, the six-speed EDC automatic is fragile, and the simple 0.9 TCe and 1.5 dCi are the safer choices.

Which Clio 4 years and versions exist

ADAC dates the first series from November 2012 to June 2016; the facelift followed in 2016 with new bumpers, revised headlights (LED optional) and renamed trim levels. The hatchback is five-door only, 4.06 m long, with a 300-litre boot. The Clio Grandtour estate stretches that to 4.27 m and 443 litres (AutoScout24), which makes it a rare small estate with a usable load bay. The Clio 4 was replaced by the Clio 5 in 2019, and the R.S. versions with 200 or 220 PS sit apart as enthusiast cars.

Euro NCAP gave the Clio 4 five stars, with four airbags as standard (AutoScout24). The Clio model page lists the specifications for all generations.

Engines to choose and engines to avoid

Engine kW (PS) Years Gearbox Timing drive Verdict
1.2 16V (D4F) 54 kW (74 PS) 2012-2019 5-speed manual Belt Cheap, slow, simple
0.9 TCe (H4Bt) 66 kW (90 PS) 2012-2019 5-speed manual Chain Best all-round petrol
1.2 TCe (H5Ft) 88 kW (120 PS) 2013-2018 6-speed EDC, manual from MY2017 Chain Avoid pre-July 2016 builds
1.5 dCi (K9K) 55 kW (75 PS) / 66 kW (90 PS) 2012-2019 Manual, EDC on the 90 Belt Best for high mileage
1.5 dCi (K9K) 81 kW (110 PS) 2016-2019 6-speed manual Belt Strongest diesel

Outputs come from ADAC and AutoScout24; the 110 PS diesel arrived in June 2016, according to What Car?. The 1.2 16V costs least to buy, and the ADAC list price for it was €12,690 at launch in 2012. Its 107 Nm feel thin outside town and ADAC lists 5.5 l/100 km on the NEDC cycle, more than the 5.2 l/100 km of the TCe 120 EDC.

The 1.2 TCe is the engine to research before you buy. UFC-Que Choisir reported in 2019 that an internal Renault note covered H5Ft engines built from 1 October 2012 to 20 July 2016. Affected engines can burn more than a litre of oil per 1,000 km, and exhaust valve damage can end in engine failure. The same engine went into the Captur, Megane, Kadjar, several Dacias and the Nissan Qashqai and Juke. Renault told The Connexion in 2023 that fewer than 10% of these engines had shown excess oil consumption and that it had paid in 93% of identified cases. A French lawyer filed a criminal complaint for 1,789 owners that year. Renault replaced the H5Ft with the 1.3 TCe in late 2018.

The 0.9 TCe is the engine most buyers end up with (AutoScout24 counted about one in three used Clios). It is a turbo three-cylinder with a timing chain and no automatic option. The 1.5 dCi is the long-distance engine, with official consumption of 3.5-3.7 l/100 km, and Auto Express describes it as proven. It needs regular motorway runs, because the particulate filter clogs on town use, as Parkers warns.

EDC automatic or manual

The EDC is a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox, offered on the TCe 120 and the dCi 90. ADAC lists the TCe 120 EDC at 5.2 l/100 km on the NEDC cycle, so the automatic does not cost much fuel. Durability is the issue. Fiches-Auto collected owner reports of dry-clutch EDC units in the Clio 4 and Captur: premature clutch wear, sometimes before 30,000 km, jerky engagement when cold, and overheating warnings with the gearbox dropping into neutral. The site found complaints were most frequent before 2017. On the R.S., Parkers reports "check auto gearbox" warnings and lost gears, cured by a new battery at best or a new gearbox control unit.

A manual Clio is the default recommendation. If you need an automatic, read the guide to automatic gearbox types and budget for a specialist check of the clutch adaptation values before you buy.

How reliable the Clio 4 is

ADAC's 2019 breakdown statistics recorded 24.2 breakdowns per 1,000 Clios registered in 2013 and 26.2 for 2014, falling to 15.7 for 2015. The battery was the main cause across 2009-2016 registrations. TUV results look worse with age. AUTO BILD's 2026 TUV data for the Clio line shows 44.9% of 12-13-year-old cars passing without defects, against a 56.0% average, and 40.4% with significant defects, against 28.4%. For the Clio 3 and 4, inspectors most often flag worn suspension ball joints, corroded brake lines and worn brake discs. Oil leaks are rare and the exhausts last longer than average.

Recalls matter more on this car than on most rivals. ADAC lists brake-hose chafing against the wheel-arch liners (recalls in September 2014 and August 2015, together covering more than 690,000 cars worldwide), loose axle carrier bolts in December 2016, a detaching roof spoiler on R.S. and GT models, and a rear seatback that could fail in a crash. The seatback recall of November 2017 covered 260,453 cars built from May 2012 to July 2017.

Running costs

The 1.5 dCi and the 1.2 16V use a timing belt. AD France gives 150,000 km or six years for the diesel and 120,000 km for the 1.2 16V. For the 0.9 TCe chain, sources disagree: AD quotes 180,000 km or 10 years, while Parkers advises renewal by 100,000 miles (about 160,000 km), especially if the chain rattles. AD France quoted €400-600 for a belt kit with water pump in its 2026 price guide. The guide to timing belts and chains explains how to read the service record.

Smaller faults are cheap but frequent. Auto Express and Parkers list failing ignition coils on the 1.2 (about £40 each in the UK), unreliable tyre pressure sensors, ABS sensor warnings and intermittent electrical faults with wipers and windows.

Prices today and how the Clio compares

The catalogue gives a median AutoScout24 asking price of about €3,900 in November 2026, with most cars between €2,300 and €5,500. That figure comes from only 213 offers labelled as Clio IV, so treat it as a guide. The spread is about engine and age: early 1.2 16V cars sit at the bottom, and post-2016 0.9 TCe and dCi 110 cars with low mileage sit at the top. Real prices depend on year, mileage, engine and condition.

Its closest rival is the Peugeot 208, which has its own engine problem in the 1.2 PureTech timing belt. The Clio wins on boot space and offers an estate; the 208 has the lower breakdown rate in ADAC's tables. A Volkswagen Polo of the same age usually costs more.

How to find a good one

Ask for the VIN first and confirm with a Renault dealer that every recall is closed, above all the brake hoses and the rear seat. On a 1.2 TCe, ask for an oil consumption test record or proof of the engine software update, and check the dipstick after the test drive. Parkers notes that coil springs can corrode and snap, so look at the springs with a torch and listen for clonks. Lift the carpets in the footwells and the boot: failed door and boot seals let water in.

Questions and answers

Is the Renault Clio 4 reliable?

It is average when young and below average with age. ADAC recorded 24-26 breakdowns per 1,000 cars for 2013-2014 registrations, mostly batteries, and TUV data shows more significant defects than average from about six years on. Choose a simple engine and check the recalls.

Which Clio 4 engines burn oil?

The 1.2 TCe (H5Ft), mainly the 120 PS version built between October 2012 and July 2016. UFC-Que Choisir reported oil use above a litre per 1,000 km and possible engine destruction. The 0.9 TCe and the 1.5 dCi are not part of that problem.

Is the Clio EDC automatic gearbox reliable?

It is the weak point of the range. Owner reports gathered by Fiches-Auto describe premature clutch wear, sometimes before 30,000 km, jerky engagement and overheating, with problems most frequent before 2017. A manual is the safer used buy.

Does the Clio 4 have a timing belt or chain?

It depends on the engine. The 0.9 TCe uses a chain; the 1.5 dCi and the 1.2 16V use a belt. AD France gives 150,000 km or six years for the diesel belt and 120,000 km for the 1.2 16V.

Clio 4 or Peugeot 208: which is the better used buy?

With the right engines, both work. The Clio offers a bigger boot and an estate version; the 208 had lower ADAC breakdown rates. The Clio's risk is the 1.2 TCe, the 208's is the 1.2 PureTech timing belt, so the engine choice matters more than the badge.
