Verdict
On a tight budget, buy a 2014-2017 Polo 5 facelift or an early Polo 5 with the 1.4 non-turbo engine. Avoid early EA111 TSI petrols without chain records. With more money, a 2019-2022 Polo 6 1.0 TSI is the safer pick. Median asking prices in November 2026 were about €4,900 and €11,450.

Used: AutoScout24 asking prices in eight EU countries, November 2026, whole generation (10th-90th percentile). New: ADAC list price in Germany for the cheapest version at launch. A real price depends on year, mileage, engine and condition.
A used Polo comes in two very different price brackets. The Polo 5 had a median asking price of about €4,900 in November 2026, the Polo 6 about €11,450 in November 2026. The cheaper car is a good buy only with the right engine; the newer one has some of the lowest breakdown rates ADAC records for any small car.
Polo 5 or Polo 6: which generation fits
The Polo 5, known internally as 6R, made its debut in spring 2009, according to Auto Bild. It was facelifted in 2014 and became the 6C, and Gebrauchtwagenberater dates the switch to the new EA211 petrol engines with a toothed belt to April 2014. That date splits the Polo 5 into two cars: early versions with chain-driven EA111 petrols and diesels from the EA189 family, and later versions with newer engines.
The Polo 6 (AW) went on sale in the UK in October 2017, with first deliveries in January 2018, and was sold as a five-door only, Auto Express reports. Its facelift arrived in September 2021 and dropped the diesel, leaving the 1.0 and 1.0 TSI petrols with the GTI following.
For a budget below about €7,000 in November 2026, the Polo 5 is the only option, and the best choices are post-2014 cars or the simple pre-2014 1.4. Above that, a 2019-2022 Polo 6 is the safer purchase, as ADAC's breakdown figures show.

Polo 5 ratings follow Gebrauchtwagenberater and Auto Bild; Polo 6 outputs follow ADAC.
In the Polo 5, Auto Bild's 2017 used-car test named the naturally aspirated 1.4 with 63 kW (85 PS) and a manual gearbox as the best choice for most buyers: it has no chain or turbo trouble and used about 6.3 l/100 km in the test. Gebrauchtwagenberater notes that this engine (code CGGB) has a belt. The early 1.2 TSI and 1.4 TSI are strong and economical, but Auto Bild and the 2026 TÜV summary both flag chain damage, and Gebrauchtwagenberater reports oil use of more than 1 litre per 1,000 km on some EA111 engines. A cold-start rattle is the warning sign. Auto Bild put a chain replacement on the 1.4 TSI at €887 in 2017.
The 1.2 TSI from 2010 to 2012 also had a recall for its turbo wastegate actuator, which causes loss of power when it fails; the service book should carry code 24V9. Early diesels are EA189 engines, affected by the emissions scandal. Gebrauchtwagenberater advises confirming update 23R7 by VIN. Auto Bild considered the TDI worthwhile only above about 10,000 km a year, and warned that from 150,000 km VW requires an ash check on the particulate filter, with a new filter costing €1,500 in 2017.
In the Polo 6, ADAC recommends the 1.0 TSI with 70 kW (95 PS) or 85 kW (116 PS), especially with DSG. It is livelier than the 1.0 MPI and uses about the same fuel. ADAC describes the 1.0 MPI as fine in town but overwhelmed with a full load on country roads.
DSG or manual
Both generations offer the 7-speed DQ200 dual-clutch gearbox. Auto Bild's 2017 test of the Polo 5 described judder when pulling away, rough shifts and clear rev flares, with clutches costing about €1,000 and a mechatronic unit about €1,200 in 2017. Gebrauchtwagenberater notes a service action on gearboxes up to about the end of 2013 that replaced the synthetic gear oil with mineral oil.
For the Polo 6, Gebrauchtwagenberater says the DQ200 is offered only with the 1.0 TSI and 1.6 TDI and is more mature than in the predecessor, though still sensitive to heavy town use and towing. Auto Bild's 2026 TÜV summary still mentions occasional jerky DSG gearboxes. A manual remains the cheaper long-term option.
Running costs
Auto Bild measured 6.1 l/100 km for the three-cylinder 1.2 petrol in the Polo 5, more than the 1.4 with an extra cylinder, and between 4.5 and 4.8 l/100 km for the TDI versions it tested. For the Polo 6, Auto Express says Volkswagen claimed over 60 mpg for the 1.0 TSI on a run, while most owners see 50-55 mpg, about 5.1-5.6 l/100 km.
Auto Express gives the Polo 6 timing belt interval as five years, with no mileage limit, and notes that coolant has no set replacement interval. Low annual mileage has a cost of its own: TSI turbo actuators can seize on cars that are rarely driven, and the usual fix is a rebuilt turbo.
Prices today and what you get for the money
ADAC's German list price for the cheapest Polo 5 was €12,450 in 2009, and €12,975 for the Polo 6 in 2017. AutoScout24 listings across eight European markets in November 2026 showed 6,290 Polo 5 cars, mostly between €2,900 and €6,500 in November 2026, and 16,064 Polo 6 cars, mostly between €7,950 and €14,000 in November 2026.
Asking prices cover each whole generation, so real prices depend on year, mileage, engine and condition. In the Polo 5, the cheapest cars are early 1.2 three-cylinder and TSI models; facelift cars from 2014 cost more and are worth it. In the Polo 6, early 1.0 MPI cars sit at the bottom and post-2021 facelift cars and the GTI at the top.
Polo against its rivals
ADAC's 2025 breakdown statistics give the Polo 6 rates of 8.9 per 1,000 cars for 2017 registrations, 4.3 for 2019 and 3.1 for 2021, falling to 1.8 for 2022, and ADAC rates it good to very good. The 2026 statistics again place the Polo among the best small cars. What Car?'s reliability survey gives it 98.5%, fifth of 26 small cars. Auto Express owners are less impressed: the Polo 6 placed 48th of 75 cars in Driver Power 2021, with reliability among its weaker scores.
The Renault Clio and Peugeot 208 are the main alternatives and usually cost less for the same year. For a new driver, the Polo also features among the best used first cars. The Polo hub page covers the older generations.
How to find a good one
Check the VIN for recalls first. On the Polo 5, Auto Express lists a December 2014 fuel filter leak recall, an airbag recall about two months later, an August 2015 front seat recall, a June 2016 child lock recall and the 1.6 TDI emissions recall. ADAC adds a starter solenoid that could overheat and catch fire. On the Polo 6, ADAC lists the 2018 centre rear seat belt buckle recall (40,250 cars in Germany) and the 2019 parking brake recall for cars with rear drum brakes (65,000 cars in Germany).
Then look underneath and at the front. The 2026 TÜV summary shows worn steering joints on six-to-seven-year-old Polo 6 cars at 20 times the average rate, caused by perished dust boots, and misaimed dipped beam across all years. On the Polo 5, it lists brakes, springs, dampers, rust, exhausts and front lighting, while Auto Bild's 2017 test found rust on the lower edge of the bonnet. Parkers reminds buyers that a passenger airbag deactivation switch was not standard on the Polo 5, which matters if you need a rear-facing child seat in front.

Questions and answers
Which used Polo engine is most reliable?
In the Polo 6, the 1.0 TSI with 70 kW (95 PS) or 85 kW (116 PS) is ADAC's recommendation. In the Polo 5, the non-turbo 1.4 with 63 kW (85 PS) avoids the chain trouble of the early TSI engines, and post-2014 EA211 petrols have a belt and no known pattern faults.
Does the Polo 5 1.2 TSI have timing chain problems?
Yes, the early EA111 1.2 TSI built until 2014 uses a chain that can stretch. Listen for a rattle after a cold start and ask for replacement invoices. From April 2014 the facelifted Polo switched to the EA211 1.2 TSI with a toothed belt, which has no known pattern problem.
Is the Polo 6 reliable?
Yes. ADAC's 2025 breakdown statistics show 4.3 breakdowns per 1,000 cars for 2019 registrations and 1.8 for 2022, and What Car? gives it 98.5% for reliability. Check the steering joints, the recall work and the DSG behaviour before buying.
Should I buy a Polo with the DSG gearbox?
Only with care. Both generations use the dry-clutch 7-speed DQ200, which can judder when pulling away. Auto Bild quoted about €1,000 for clutches and €1,200 for a mechatronic unit in 2017. A manual is cheaper to keep, especially for town driving.
How much does a used Polo cost?
In November 2026 the Polo 5 had a median asking price of about €4,900, with most cars between €2,900 and €6,500. The Polo 6 had a median of about €11,450, mostly between €7,950 and €14,000. Year, engine and mileage explain most of the spread.
