Verdict Opinion

The Kodiaq wins on space per euro. Among the current models only the Škoda offers seven seats, and its 910-litre five-seat boot is the headline figure of the second generation.

The Tiguan wins on compactness and choice. It is easier to park, its eHybrid offers the longer official electric range, and its second generation gives used buyers both the Allspace and the fast Tiguan R.

Which one to choose ↓

The Škoda Kodiaq and the Volkswagen Tiguan come from the same group and use the same MQB toolkit, so buyers rightly ask what they get for the different badge. The short answer: the Škoda is the larger car, the Volkswagen the more compact and slightly more upmarket one.

The Tiguan is older. Its first generation went on sale in early 2008, the second in January 2016 and the third in February 2024. The Kodiaq was shown in Berlin on 1 September 2016 as Škoda's first large SUV, and its second generation was presented in October 2023. In the Tiguan's second generation the closest rival was not the regular car but the long-wheelbase Tiguan Allspace of 2017, which the Kodiaq matched almost seat for seat.

Skoda Kodiaq vs VW Tiguan: size, seats, engines and costs

Length and the third row

The first Kodiaq is 4,697 mm long on a 2,791 mm wheelbase, and its optional third row is usable by adults on short trips. The Tiguan II measures about 4.49 m on a 2.68 m wheelbase and has five seats; only the 4.70 m Allspace offered seven. The current Tiguan III is 4,551 mm long on 2,681 mm, again a five-seater. German Wikipedia says the second Kodiaq grew by another 61 mm, so the gap to the Tiguan is now roughly 20 cm. Whether either fits your garage is easy to check in our size comparison tool.

Boot space

The first Kodiaq offers up to 720 litres behind the second row and 2,065 litres when every rear seat is folded. The second generation offers up to 910 litres as a five-seater, 2,105 litres at most, and 340 litres behind the third row. The Tiguan I listed 470 litres. The extra length of the Škoda goes almost entirely into the load bay.

Engines from the same shelf

Both use 1.5 TSI, 2.0 TSI and 2.0 TDI engines with front-wheel drive or a Haldex-based four-wheel drive. In the current cars the 2.0 TDI with 142 kW (193 PS) and all-wheel drive appears in both lists. The mild-hybrid 1.5 TSI starts at 110 kW (150 PS) in the Kodiaq and 96 kW (130 PS) in the Tiguan. The performance flagships differ: the Tiguan R of 2020–2024 had 235 kW (320 PS), the second Kodiaq RS of 2024 has 195 kW (265 PS).

Plug-in hybrids

This is where the new generations moved apart from their predecessors. The Tiguan eHybrid of 2024 has 150 or 200 kW, a 19.7 kWh net battery and about 120 km of WLTP electric range. The Kodiaq iV combines a 110 kW petrol engine with an 85 kW electric motor and a 25.7 kWh battery, for which Škoda targets 100 km; its boot shrinks to 745 litres. Both charge at 11 kW on alternating current and 50 kW at a fast charger.

Prices and safety

In February 2024 the cheapest Tiguan III in Germany, the 96 kW eTSI, cost €36,600, and the eHybrid started at €48,655. Euro NCAP tested the second Kodiaq in 2024 with 89 % for adult and 83 % for child occupants; the third Tiguan scored 83 % and 88 % in its May 2024 test.

In plain words

Volkswagen Tiguan is quicker: 0–100 km/h in 7.6 s against 7.8 s for Skoda Kodiaq. Skoda Kodiaq is 207 mm longer than Volkswagen Tiguan (4,758 mm vs 4,551 mm). Volkswagen Tiguan is lighter by 41 kg (1,774 kg vs 1,815 kg). Skoda Kodiaq has the bigger boot: 910 l against 652 l. At 15,000 km a year, fuel would cost about €1,490 (Skoda Kodiaq), €1,510 (Volkswagen Tiguan) (estimated). Volkswagen Tiguan is the older design (from 2007); Skoda Kodiaq arrived in 2016. On the catalog figures, the Skoda Kodiaq is the pick for family and long trips; the Volkswagen Tiguan is the pick for city.

Which one to choose

Families with three children or a large dog should take the Kodiaq; the third row and the 910-litre five-seat boot are its reason to exist.

Drivers who park in town or want the highest electric range will be happier with the Tiguan eHybrid.

Used buyers can treat the two as mechanical twins: ADAC data show improving breakdown figures for younger Tiguans, and a full service history counts for more than the badge.
