Polestar 2 Production Ends After 200,000 Cars, Successor Due in 2027
The Polestar 2, the brand's first fully electric production car, has reached the end of the line. According to electrive, the last cars have left the factory in Luqiao, China, after more than six years of production and just over 200,000 units built. Polestar has not formally announced the end, but in Norway and Sweden new orders can no longer be configured, and customers in several other European markets are being pointed to stock cars.

Key takeaways
- Production in Luqiao ran from March 2020 to October 2026.
- Just over 200,000 cars were built; Polestar last reported more than 190,000 sold.
- A completely new successor is planned for early 2027. Polestar says it will not be a facelift.
- Until then, buyers can only choose from cars already built.
A car that started as a Volvo concept
The Polestar 2 traces back to Volvo's 2016 Concept 40.2. Its sister concept, the 40.1, became the Volvo XC40. The fastback went on sale in 2020 and was one of the first cars with Android Automotive built into the infotainment system. In 2024 Polestar switched the main versions from front-wheel drive to rear-wheel drive with a new, more efficient motor. Norway was its biggest market, with more than 16,000 cars sold there.
What replaces it
Polestar says the next generation "will not be a mere facelift but a fundamentally new vehicle". It is due in early 2027. Norway's TV 2 Broom reports that it will be a crossover; Polestar has not confirmed the body style, platform or factory.
In the meantime the brand's focus moves to the Polestar 4, built in Busan, South Korea, since the second quarter of 2026. In Germany it starts at €57,900 (2026), with first deliveries planned for late 2026 and early 2027.
Polestar's situation
In the first half of 2026 Polestar sold 30,423 cars worldwide, up 0.4%, while revenue fell about 4% to $1.36 billion (2026, about €1.2 billion). The company has cut its full-year growth forecast to a low-to-mid single-digit percentage, citing the end of the Polestar 2 and changes in the United States: from model year 2027 Polestar can no longer sell new cars there under the US Connected Vehicle Rule. About 80% of its sales now come from Europe.
Advice for buyers
If you want a new Polestar 2, the remaining stock cars are the last chance, and dealers may be more open to offers on unsold cars. For a used Polestar 2, the end of production changes nothing: parts and service continue through the Polestar and Volvo network.
