The Haval H6 is a compact SUV made by Great Wall Motor (GWM) in China since 2011 and sold under its Haval brand. It is GWM's best-selling model, with more than four million cars sold worldwide by 2024, and it led China's SUV segment for 103 consecutive months. Three generations have been built; the third, on GWM's Lemon platform, arrived in 2020 and reached Germany in January 2026 as a full hybrid priced from €31,990.

In short

Haval H6 generations

Generation Years Platform Engines Power
First from 2011 original H6 platform 1.3 and 1.5 turbo petrol, turbodiesel 103–112 kW (140–152 PS)
Second from about 2017 first-generation platform, shared with the WEY VV5 1.5 and 2.0 turbo petrol up to 147 kW (200 PS)
Third from 2020 Lemon 1.5 and 2.0 turbo, HEV, PHEV 126–268.7 kW (171–365 PS)

First generation (2011)

The first H6 was shown at the 2011 Shanghai Auto Show as the Great Wall Haval H6, before Haval became a brand of its own. Mass production began in Tianjin in February 2011. The one-millionth car left the line in November 2015, about four years and three months after launch.

Engines were a 1.5-litre turbo with 112 kW (152 PS) and a 1.3-litre turbo with 103 kW (140 PS), plus a common-rail turbodiesel. Suppliers included Bosch for traction control, Delphi for diesel electronics, BorgWarner for the four-wheel drive and Honeywell for the turbocharger. China-NCAP gave it five stars in April 2012. The boot held 808 litres, or 2,010 litres with the rear seats folded. Our separate article covers the first-generation Haval H6 and its Red and Blue Label versions in detail.

Second generation (about 2017)

The second H6 kept the first generation's platform, which it shared with the WEY VV5. GWM sold it in two styles: the Blue Label and the Red Label, with different front and rear designs and badge colours. The two-label strategy ended in 2020. The 2.0-litre turbo produced 147 kW (200 PS), and the Red Label was 4,600 mm long. A China-Chic Edition followed in March 2021, quoted at 7.6 s from 0 to 100 km/h.

Third generation (2020)

The current H6 made its debut at the 2020 Chengdu Motor Show, and pre-sales opened in July 2020. It was the first Haval on the Lemon platform. A hybrid followed in Bangkok in March 2021 and a plug-in hybrid at the Thailand Motor Expo in December 2021. In April 2024 a facelift brought vertical LED daytime running lights, new tail lights and a 14.6-inch screen running Coffee OS 3.0. Length grew to 4,703 mm, while width, height and wheelbase stayed the same.

Engines, hybrid and plug-in hybrid

Version Engine Power Torque Gearbox
1.5T 1.5 turbo petrol 126 kW (171 PS) 285 Nm 9-speed DCT
2.0T 2.0 turbo petrol 167 kW (227 PS) 385 Nm 9-speed DCT
H6S 2.0 MHEV 2.0 turbo, mild hybrid 155 kW (211 PS) — —
HEV 1.5 turbo + 130 kW motor 179 kW (243 PS) system 530 Nm DHT
PHEV 1.5 turbo + electric motor 240 kW (326 PS) system — DHT
PHEV Hi4 AWD 1.5 turbo + two motors 268.7 kW (365 PS) system 760 Nm (2025 facelift) DHT

Wikipedia gives the hybrid's petrol engine as 123 kW (167 PS) and 285 Nm, while the ADAC catalogue lists 110 kW (150 PS) and 230 Nm for the 2026 German car. The system output is the same in both: 179 kW (243 PS) and 530 Nm. GWM claims a thermal efficiency of 38% for the 2.0-litre turbo. Figures for the facelifted plug-in hybrid were published for Pakistan in August 2025. They give a 19.09 kWh LFP battery, DC charging at up to 34 kW and 0–100 km/h in 4.8 s for the Hi4. The power converter turns these kW figures into PS or hp.

The Haval H6 in Germany: specs and price

GWM launched the H6 in Germany in January 2026 as the first model of its Haval range there. Only the full hybrid with front-wheel drive is offered, in Premium and Luxury trims.

Ecomento reported a starting price of €31,990 in Germany for 2026, and ADAC lists €34,690 for the Luxury. GWM gives five years of warranty without a mileage limit and eight years or 160,000 km on the high-voltage battery. Standard equipment includes a 10.25-inch digital cockpit, the 14.6-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The WLTP figure is split into 6.4 l/100 km for short trips, 4.7 in the suburbs, 4.8 on rural roads and 7.3 on the motorway. The pattern is typical of a full hybrid: it saves most in slow traffic and least at high speed. Put your own mileage into the fuel cost calculator to compare it with a petrol or diesel SUV.

Safety: ANCAP result

ANCAP tested the third-generation H6 in its Australian specification in March 2022, under a protocol aligned with Euro NCAP, and gave it five stars.

Area Points Score
Adult occupant 34.22 90%
Child occupant 43.55 88%
Vulnerable road users (pedestrians) 39.45 73%
Safety assist 13.06 81%

Pedestrian and cyclist protection was the weakest area, at 73%.

Coupé, GT, H6S and H6L

GWM has built several derivatives on the H6 name. The H6 Coupé was unveiled at the 2015 Shanghai Auto Show as the production version of the Coupe C concept. It was slightly smaller than the standard H6 but priced higher. The fastback H6S followed in August 2021 and is 4,714 mm long and 1,940 mm wide; it was also offered as a 2.0-litre mild hybrid. In Australia and South Africa GWM sells the H6 GT, launched in Australia in July 2022 with a 2.0-litre turbo; a plug-in hybrid was added later.

The H6L of November 2025 is a longer version based on the Xiaolong Max. Its 2.0-litre turbo makes 175 kW (238 PS) and 385 Nm through a nine-speed dual-clutch gearbox. It reaches 100 km/h in 7.2 s and uses 7.4 l/100 km on the WLTC cycle.

Sales: China's SUV leader

The H6 dominated China's SUV market for most of the 2010s. Its best year was 2016, with 580,683 cars sold in China. In December 2016 alone, 80,495 were sold, a monthly record that Wikipedia says still stands. Since then its sales in China have fallen every year.

Year Sales in China
2012 112,262
2016 580,683
2020 376,864
2023 214,304
2024 144,537
2025 91,646

Outside China, the H6 sells in Australia, South Africa, Thailand, Mexico, Brazil and other markets. In Brazil sales rose from 10,704 in 2023 to 33,400 in 2025.

Rivals and who should buy the Haval H6

In Germany the ADAC names the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V and KGM Torres as comparable models. Our pages on the Toyota RAV4 and the Hyundai Tucson cover two of the best-known hybrid SUVs it competes with. The open questions for a brand new to Germany are the dealer network and resale values, which the five-year warranty partly offsets.

The H6 HEV suits drivers who want a roomy hybrid SUV for mixed and town driving at a lower price than the established rivals. Buyers who tow heavy trailers should note the 1,500 kg limit, and those who drive mostly on motorways will see less benefit from the hybrid. Other options are collected in our list of the best hybrid cars, and the compare section puts the H6 against any rival.
