Usually, the appearance of both huge and small SUVs has mixed reviews: someone welcomes a light sports relief, and others think that off-road car should be stupid, short and square. Despite the fact that Santa Fe and Tucson are built on a single platform, their style is very different, and it’s not just length.
For 2 debut years, the car actually looked like a smaller version of the older brother. Although in a way it was. The car was short, but not whimsical, got tight sides and sharp wings instead of wavy flanks of Santa Fe. In 2007, Hyundai Santa Fe received smooth and elegant features in the pursuit of Toyota RAV4 and Honda CIA-V. As for the Tucson, the model remained “chopped off”. The difference in dimensions also increased significantly.
Hyundai Tucson of the 1st generation was not aimed at serious lack of roads, but the small overhangs helped to overcome small obstacles. The interior of the debut Hyundai Tucson 2004 has a “hard” plastic, so the machine has many complaints from the owners of crickets (grind armrests, ventilation system deflectors, glove box and luggage compartment walls). There are large elements of radio and climate control, placed high. This improves ergonomics, as there is no need to reach and distract from the control of Hyundai Tucson 1. The rear row has two cup holders in the armrest. The luggage compartment has 540 litres. The rear door opens well. The rear seats can be folded up and increased in volume (the rear seats can be folded up to 60/40 with a lever).

The second version of this compact South Korean car, in the version “for Europe”, became known as “ix35”. The body is solid, the type is a station wagon. The appearance has significant changes that have affected the front part (the car got the actual optics), the radiator grille. The front bumper got an aggressive look. The rear part was equipped with new shapes, changed shape of glass. Now Hyundai Tucson of the 2nd generation received a spoiler. The side windows were slightly reduced. As for the wheels, they remained the same, with a diameter of 16 inches. The most expensive versions of the Korean crossover received 17-inch “rollers”.

The renovation was entrusted to the European Technical Centre Hyundai Motor Europe, located in Rüssels-heim. But there was no point in waiting for something else, as it was dangerous to change the appearance of a perfectly sold model earlier.
The design group from Europe only slightly tweaked the bumper lines, decided to update the grille and offered a new look of 17 – and 18-inch “rollers”. Changes in 2013 also affected the front and rear optics. Headlights received a stylish LED strip DHO, which carefully highlighted the upper line of optics.
Top-of-the-range equipment has a bi-xenon filling at its disposal. Rear lights were equipped with LEDs, which are very popular nowadays. The changes have not affected the size of the crossover. Clearance did not exceed 170 millimeters. The appearance of the second generation interior Hyundai Tucson has not changed dramatically. The finishing materials were of average quality. But the Korean engineering group has done a good job of handling the crossover.
The central console was made in the same style as Kia Sportage (familiar keys control multimedia system and “climate”). Only the dashboard slightly stands out. Already in a base complete set there is an air conditioner, a steering wheel with the amplifier, window lifters on all glasses, 2 airbags and function of heating of mirrors. The music system is modest and has a sound that is hard to call clean.
In general, the Hyundai Tucson 2 salon has good ergonomics. It was nice to know that the model now has a small innovation point plan. There are additional cup holders and new finishes. It turns out that our customers “ix35” will receive a 16-valve power plant of Nu division instead of the previously used Theta-II.
The engine has a four-cylinder in-line arrangement with front transverse arrangement. The volume remained the same – 2.0 liters. The engines with direct fuel injection technology are offered for Europeans, that’s why such “engines” produce 163 horsepower. However, Russians receive only engines equipped with a distributed injection system, so the power will not exceed 150 “horses”, and the torsional forces are equal to 191 Nm.
Ecological theme of the car’s designers did not pass the side – the updated Hyundai Tucson 2 meets Euro-4 standards. This engine works either with the newest six-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. C “mechanics” engine consumes about 7.3 liters of gasoline from AI-95 and above. With the “machine” the demand is increased up to 7.4 liters per every hundred kilometers. All-wheel drive versions “eat” by 0.2 liters.
The new diesel version is considered to be the “junior” version. In reality, we already have a familiar turbocharged four-cylinder, 2.0-liter engine, which received a smaller boost. It has an in-line layout of cylinders and has a 16-valve gas distribution device and direct injection fuel system. The turbo diesel has been well worked on, focusing on increasing fuel economy.
For example, there is the technology of exhaust gas recirculation, which operates on the platform of the new eco-technology LP-EGR. The “Junior” produces 136 “horses”, and the top diesel version develops the previous 184 horsepower. There are no exact data on fuel consumption, but judging by the information of some sources from Europe, the 184 hp diesel version “eats” about 6.0 liters (before 7.1).
The diesel unit was synchronized with a 6-speed automatic box. Previously, the “older” diesel engine has always worked with an automatic transmission, but for a 136-horsepower one it is a new experience. Only a four-wheel drive system is available. The second generation received almost the same suspension structure as in the first crossover family. Koreans were only able to reconfigure the individual components and replace some of the silent blocks. Otherwise, the previous mechanisms.
The load-bearing body is connected to an independent suspension platform on a McPherson-type platform, where there is also a stabilizer for lateral stability. The top 2 generation Hyundai Tucson models have adjustable dampers with adjustable stiffness. The second generation car was considered one of the safest cars in its niche. That’s why the model has already earned a solid award “Top Safety” from IIHS and 5 honest stars at Euro NCAP crash-tests. In terms of adult safety, the car scored 90 percent and the child 88 percent. After the modernization in 2013, the developers managed to strengthen their leadership by upgrading the vehicle safety system to almost ideal.
But you can feel all the charms of technology only on the expensive design, as the basic modifications have only front airbags and standard electronic systems ABS, EBD and so on. After restyling, the Russian market has received an abundance of versions to choose from. Now there are new equipment: Start, Comfort, Trave and Prime. Interestingly, some of this list received an additional version with Advanced and Style packages.
As of 2015, the starting performance was estimated at 1,142,900 p.p. To install the all-wheel drive system and the automatic box, it was necessary to pay an additional 157,000. The top version cost from 1,468,900 ppm and had a leather interior, engine start button, Flex Steer system, window tinting, helm heating function, bi-xenon headlights, etc.
III generation (2015-2018)
The third generation of the Hyundai Tucson crossover was demonstrated in spring (March) 2015 at the Geneva Motor Show. The third generation interior has also been changed. The specialists changed the central console, the appearance and location of the ventilation system deflectors, added several control keys, corrected the display and the control system as a whole. Hyundai Tucson 3 has a progressive digital device panel, successfully assembled with a console that has an 8-inch touch screen and multimedia center.
The device itself received two bright devices with high readability of data under any conditions. Between them there was a display of the “onboard computer”. There is a fairly large control unit with climate control and a neat, comfortable multifunctional steering wheel with quick control keys. Inside the Korean crossover, only high quality materials – pleasant and expensive plastic – were used for finishing. The leather received a shade of Wine Red on the seats and door inserts.
The use of the softer blue light was a pleasure. Top-of-the-range equipment has a panoramic roof. The Infinity premium music system is used. It’s a good thing that the steering wheel has a heating function, so it’s much more pleasant to hold it in your hand. According to the manufacturers’ words, the front seats are more comfortable and the cushions are longer.
Forward mounted seats have a heating and ventilation function. For rear passengers there is also a function of heating and adjustment of seats (there are air ducts).
The interior is simple but elegant. Any detail is located in its place. As the novelty “has grown”, passengers now feel the increased space and comfort. 5 adults can be accommodated freely. Modern equipment only adds comfort.
The luggage compartment has been slightly reduced to 488 litres. If necessary, this data can be increased by removing the rear seats “in the floor”, which will provide 1,478 liters of useful space. The list of engines that are available for Russians has 3 copies of gasoline and diesel engines. Gasoline basic engine is considered to be 150 hp, 2.0-liter Nu MPi D-CVVT, producing 192 Nm of torque. The engine is installed on 5 different modifications, which are front and four-wheel drive.

The maximum speed does not exceed 182-201 kilometers per hour. The first hundred is achieved by the Korean 3rd generation crossover in 9.1-11.8 seconds. Consume such engines from 6.3 to 7.9 liters of fuel for every 100 kilometers.
Transmission III generation
Three gearboxes are provided. It is a 6-speed manual or automatic, as well as 7-speed robotic gearbox with 2 clutches. The car is made of particularly high-strength steel (AHSS) and is hot stamped, which increases the rigidity of the body. Koreans have not forgotten to equip their novelty with dynamic stabilization system (VSM) and traction control during turning (ATCC).
Comparison with competitors
The main opponent is still KIA Sportage (updated version). This is partly due to the fact that Hyundai was created “according to the drawings” of KIA. In addition, Ford Kuga, Honda CR-V, “noopener noreferrer”>Toyota RAV4, Mitsubishi Outlander, Nissan X-Trail and Chery Tiggo 5.
Hyundai Tucson III restyling (2018-present)
Already in April 2018, during the international New York City Motor Show, the company showed an updated all-terrain vehicle Hyundai Tucson 3. This version received a “refreshed” look, revised interior and the latest equipment. The model has long been a leader in the top sales of crossovers in our country, so this update should only add confidence to the Korean car.
Initially, when buying a car, the appearance is striking. If you look at it remotely, it feels as if designers retouched bumper and headlights a little bit, but if you look closer, you realize that there are much more changes. Ahead there is a high smooth hood, emphasized by the LED optics of a narrow profile.
DHO always have only LED filling, and diode optics with washers are only in the performance of Lifestyle. The central part has an aggressive style of a new chrome grille. Chrome is present only in expensive complete sets, the regular car possesses a silver plastic edging.
The massive bumper upgraded Hyundai Tucson 2018-2019 has more muscular shapes, stylish fog lights, installed as standard, as well as a small plastic protection. The Hyundai Tucson 2019 side part has expanded arches and changed the style of the upper aerodynamic line. The line at the top starts from the front arch, extends over the door handles, and near the rear handle is divided into 2, flowing into the upper and central part of the stern optics.
The presence of chrome on the door handle should be expected only in the top versions, as well as the lower edging of the glass. The exhaust system is represented by double trapezoidal connections.
It turns out that such changes are serious. There are many changes and they all give a fresh look. The car will be easier to stand out among the urban traffic of cars, and the aggressive style of the company will allow to interest the young generation of drivers, and at the same time not to scare away adults.
As for the interior architecture, it remained intact, one style of the interior became more modern. There is a torpedo panel distributed over two areas, which already looks more inflated and muscular. Some of the equipment has received the central part of the cladding under the carbon fiber. Hyundai Tucson 3 chairs have not been changed. The basic equipment received mechanical adjustments and fabric cladding.
More expensive equipment has leather and electrical adjustments. It is nice that you can choose the color of the fabric or leather (there is a presence of black and beige color). The interior mirror has been changed, and the seats have received minor improvements in the contour. The inside of the Korean restyled crossover has a strict, classic and modern design. The changes did not affect the three-spoke steering wheel, which has leather trim and control keys of the multimedia system. Slightly transformed “dashboard”. All the same, it has the same 2 mechanical circles and clear screen “onboard computer” in the center, designed for 4.2 inches. The console, located in the center, has the newest screen of multimedia installation, placed at the top and received 8 inches.
This system works with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Underneath it you can see a familiar block of a separate climatic system with a display and washers on the sides. The tunnel has been changed, and a wireless charging platform for the smartphone has been installed in front of the gearshift handle. The tunnel has a gearbox handle, two cup holders and several keys to select the driving mode.
Interior updated Hyundai Tucson 3 has an abundance of different capacities and shelves to keep the right things. The back part has an ordinary sofa with enough space. There is a folding armrest with 2 cupholders. You can use the built-in USB-connector for your purposes. As a separate option, a massive panorama is installed on the roof, which is mostly enjoyed by passengers sitting on the rear sofa.
Luggage compartment has not changed. The initial condition has 488 liters, and if you fold the back sofa, the volume will increase to 1478 liters of usable space. The “hold” of Hyundai Tucson 2018-2019 placed a full-size “spare” and repair kit. In terms of interior decoration, the “Korean” can “fight” even with more famous crossovers. However, the basic equipment has received too simple equipment.
The third family of Hyundai Tucson 2019 in Russia received 3 engines to choose from and the same number of transmissions, as well as a couple of types of drive. The basic one is a gasoline 2.0-liter four-cylinder power plant, which received a system of distributed power supply. All this allows to develop “engine” of about 150 “horses” and 192 Nm. The most powerful gasoline engine has a volume of 1.6 litres, as well as turbocharging and direct fuel supply. It produces 177 horsepower and 265 Nm of rotational force. The speed limit is 201 km/h, and acceleration to 100 km/h takes only 9.1 seconds. According to the passport, this option “eats” 7.5 liters of gasoline.
The Hyundai Tucson 2019 model year also received a 2.0-liter diesel engine with “direct” injection and turbine, which has 185 horsepower and 400 Nm of thrust. As for the 1.6-liter turbocharged engine, it is synchronized with the 7-range robotic gearbox with 2 clutches and all-wheel drive system. Diesel version 2.0-liter only works with the new 8-speed automatic transmission.
The all-wheel drive system on the restyled crossover was implemented according to the known scenario – the torque for the rear wheels is selected by electro-hydraulic clutch, which regulates the number of torque on the front and rear axles.
