Hyundai Grandeur is a front-drive business class sedan (“E”-class), combining the sophistication of the exterior, solid interior design, current technical components and good “driving” characteristics. The car is often addressed to wealthy people with a family who run their own business or hold a managerial position. The three-volume model was first “born” in 1986 and became one of the early facts of badge-engineering, as it was the twin of the 4-door Mitsubishi Debonair 2 generation.
Already in 1998, the car gained independence and at the same time, it was reclassified as an E-class business sedan. To date, the Korean version is selling well, especially at home. Hyundai Grandeur L (I generation 1986-1992)
The debut family of full-size sedan Hyundai Grander 1, received the internal designation “L”, which represented the “licensed copy” of the abovementioned Japanese “trashcat” Mitsubishi Debonair and was released in 1986. In the same year, the sedan entered the assembly line. The model was in series production until 1992 and gave way to the next generation of “Koreans”.
The car looked like a stylistics of the past years. Naturally, there were no smooth lines. Behind the door, which opened access to the second row of seats, there was a small window. The car looked simple and had no refinement. The height of the road clearance was at a confident 165-millimeter level.
The first generation of the Grand Prixer had three gasoline engines paired with five-speed “mechanics” or four-stage “automatic”. All torque potential was transferred to the front drive. Hyundai Grander 1 had in-line four-cylinder and V-shaped six-cylinder engines with volumes of 2.0 – 3.0 liters, where there was a multipoint fuel supply.
All this made it possible to produce 120 – 164 horsepower and 159 – 231 Nm of rotational force. For the basis of the debut model they decided to use a front wheel drive base, on which the motor was placed transversely. Speaking for the sedan suspension, it is fully independent here: there is a two-lever architecture in front and four-lever architecture in the back. Hyundai Grandeur I has a steering system such as “rail gear” and is not equipped with a power steering.
The car was distinguished by simple and confident technical “minced meat”, acceptable engine power, sufficient level of comfort, classic exterior design and pleasant driving characteristics. It is clear that today everything in the sedan is outdated by all design parameters. Besides, the engine consumes a considerable amount of gasoline. The degree of safety is at the lowest level, and to buy the necessary spare parts, you will have to sweat a lot.
Hyundai Grandeur LX (II generation 1992-1998)
In 1992, Mitsubishi’s employees launched the new Debonair model. This was followed by the presentation of the 2nd generation Grander, who was still the licensed copy of the Japanese machine. The machine has grown in size – now it was almost 5 m long, and the wheelbase has grown to 2,745 millimeters. Officially, the vehicle was sold only in the Korean market, where there was good demand for this model.
Most of the sedan was bought by politicians and wealthy people, which allowed them to clearly demonstrate their high position. When 1998 came, the four-door car underwent another modernization, after which it left the “representative niche” and began to be in the “business class”.
Compared to the first generation, Hyundai Grander 2 has received 160 millimeters of ground clearance. The car became more stylish. The front bumper received built-in fog lights and a chrome grille. External rear-view mirrors now looked smoother and more aerodynamic.
The “Korean” stern had a solid luggage compartment back cover and a big bumper, which, on the right side, had double exhaust pipes at the bottom. Korean engineers decided to place in the car Hyundai Grandeur LX only atmospheric power units operating on gasoline.
The engines received a V-shaped structure and six cylinders, as well as a distributed “power supply”. Engine volume was from 2.0 to 3.5 liters. Such engines developed from 120 to 160 horses and 180 to 306 Nm of torque. All power units transmitted tractive forces only to the front wheels by means of mechanical five-speed or automatic four-range gearbox.
Hyundai Grander 2 has a platform of the 3rd Mitsubishi Debonair, where there is an independent structure of the chassis in front and behind. The two axles were equipped with a spring-lever type suspension with shock absorbers and transverse stabilizers. In the second generation, the Koreans used rack and pinion steering with power steering. The braking system received disc brakes on all wheels, and the front were ventilated.
In addition, ABS support was provided. Hyundai Grandeur II has a nice exterior, a salon of quality materials, which is also quite spacious, confident design, acceptable powertrain, comfortable suspension and good equipment, as for their years. However, along with the advantages, the second family has already migrated to the familiar problems in the form of high fuel “appetite” and problems with spare parts (mainly for Russians).
Hyundai Grandeur XG (III generation 1998-2005)
The car market did not stand still, so the second family of Korean sedan began to become obsolete. This prompted the company’s management to put on sale Hyundai Grandeur III, which received an internal index “XG”. Already this model was moved not only from the “class of representative cars” to the “business class”, but also became a fully independent model from South Korea.
When the year 2003 came, the vehicle underwent a planned improvement, which affected the appearance and interior decoration, as well as made its own adjustments to the line of power units. It completed the production of 3 generations of sedan in 2005. The height of road clearance remained at the same level (160 millimeters), if we compare the car with the 2nd family.
The novelty has been significantly improved in terms of appearance. Headlamps, radiator grille, bumper and integrated fog lamps, all add to the novelty. It was nice to see a lot of chrome in the finish of the Hyundai Grandeur III. Inside, it also became even more pleasant and of higher quality. The interior had the following options: ABS, airbags, electric chair drive, leather interior upholstery, climate control – and this is not a complete list of available options.
Hyundai Grander 3 came along with atmospheric gasoline engines with a working volume of 2.0 – 3.5 liters. These were V-shaped six-cylinder engines with distributed injection and 24-valve gas distribution mechanism. As a result, the engine developed from 137 – 200 horsepower and 177 – 313 Nm of torque.
The available “engines” had a four-speed or five-speed automatic box, and the weakest engine had a five-speed mechanical box. All efforts were transferred only to the front wheels. As a base for the vehicle used an independent layout, where there are double levers in front and four-lever architecture at the back. The steering mechanism has a rack and pinion structure and standard disc brakes with ABS support.
The third generation has a comfortable suspension, powerful engines, a confident design, pretty good looks, good quality equipment, affordable content and good dynamic characteristics. However, the problem of high gasoline consumption with the third generation remains. In addition, the body of the Grandeur 3 is not distinguished by corrosion resistance, and the interior has received weak sound insulation.
Hyundai Grandeur TG (IV generation 2005-2011)
The 4th family sedan was introduced in 2005. Four years later, Korean workers were able to renew the sedan. The improvements concerned the appearance, interior decoration, powertrain and new options. Serial production of the car was completed in 2011. Interestingly, it was Hyundai Grander 4 who was able to challenge his more legendary competitors.
During the development of the designers decided to take as the basis of Hyundai Sonata, but slightly stretched its base. The appearance of the rear area of the car looks original and attractive because of the relief of the “hips”, unusual LED headlights and two exhaust system pipes. The front part is considered to be trivial, so nothing stands out.
In terms of design, the Hyundai TG generation is simple and reliable. Using the elongated platform of the interior of the car, the interior became spacious and comfortable, mainly for back passengers. There is a leather trim. In addition, the vehicle is economical and has received a complete electric package, ABS, ESP, and dual-zone climate control system.
Based on its size, the vehicle is considered to be a real representative of the highest segment of the medium sized association. Hyundai Grandeur HG (V generation 2011-2016)
Hyundai Grandeur HG is a luxury business class car from the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai Motor Company. In 2011, the presentation of this elegant sedan was held. Consequently, the car’s ground clearance has also become smaller – from 162 to 151 mm.
Ahead is the headlamp technology with xenon – a large size, complex, wave-shaped shape, which spread from the radiator grille to about the average position of the wings installed in front. “Four Eyes” is a very good fit for a Japanese car, and this is even more noticeable when it is darker and the main xenon lighting system and additional LED ribbons, which are located in the inner contour of the headlights, light up.
Between them the grille of the false radiator with cross lines of horizontal position which are dressed in plastic, but possess a kind of chrome has found its place. The front bumper has a beautiful and aerodynamic appearance, with rolling waves, fog lights and auxiliary air duct, which was put slightly lower.

After the external inspection of the Hyundai Grandeur V, getting inside, it is noticeable that the smooth lines continue in the interior, which is simply amazing. The torpedo and centre console are shaped like a seagull with open wings. The centre console is shaped like a body, and the wings are the driver’s seat and the passenger seat next to it.
The multifunctional steering wheel has four spokes and has a leather finish with wood inlays, a heating function and a large number of keys to adjust the comfort of the car. The steering column itself has been electrically adjusted in height and depth, as well as a setting memory.
The Super Vision instrument panel (optional TFT-display), has good functionality and easy readability. Hyundai Grander of the 5th generation has at its disposal an abundance of free space not only on the front seats, but also on the rear sofa. The armchairs are made in leather.
The front row of seats is electrically powered, heated and ventilated, and an optional massage chair can be ordered. Rear seats also have a heating function, and in general, the comfort level of people sitting behind is not worse than that of the front seats.
There is plenty of space for the feet, but for tall passengers the low ceiling will bother them because of the roof, which is shaped like a coupe. Among other things, in the interior you can see a multimedia system with a 7-inch screen, which supports touch input, radio, CD-drive, MP3, USB / AUX input, 6 or 9 speakers (speaker system Infinity). Even in the standard version, Grander 5-th family has a 2-zone climate control, cruise control, front and rear parktronic, keyless access, rain sensor, electronic “handbrake” and other options that can be called a long time.
The customer will be pleased with the presence of 9 AirBags, headlamp washing options, the presence of a xenon system in the dipped-beam headlamps, sill illumination and interior elements (available as an option). Fuel consumption varies from 7 litres along the route to 14 litres in the city cycle. The cruise control independently analyzes and calculates the distance to the nearest vehicle in front and, if necessary, lowers the speed and eventually stops completely.
Hyundai Grandeur IG (VI generation 2017-present)
When the closed South Korean presentation of Hyundai Grander 2017, which took place on October 26, 2016, came to an end, the car was still shown to the general public a month later. The technical stuffing, photographs, cost and level of equipment for the Korean market were already known.
The sedan has a designated IG index and fully meets the standards of the segment on exterior design, interior decoration, the level of equipment and an abundance of choice of engines. All of this makes the machine look more aggressive and at the same time gives additional rigidity.
The Hyundai Grander 2017 side area is a bit like the cars of previous families. There is a characteristic uniform flow of shapes with a small number of sharp edges that run only along the top. Arched apertures have light alloy wheels, which received an original multi-spoke pattern.

The multimedia system has modern standards of synchronization of mobile devices (there is support for Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, MirrorLink), built-in navigation system, AUX and USB ports. The dashboard has traditional dials. The steering wheel is made four-spoke. Basic equipment is complemented by a display of the monochrome type on-board computer, designed for 3.5 inches. In the top models there is already a quality 4.2-inch color screen.
It is important that the rear passenger can use the buttons that are responsible for folding the right front seat. This allows the machine to be used as a junior representative sedan.
If we talk about filling a new South Korean sedan Hyundai Grander 6 generation, the car will be able to compete with expensive classmates. The standard version of the sedan has a front xenon optics, where there is also a DXO, interior trim made of leather, adjustable cruise control, rear camera, parking sensors installed in front and back, as well as 9 Airbag. Also the owner was equipped with auxiliary electronic systems, which can include the function of a circular view, identification of a possible collision, an option that is able to monitor the lane and signs on the road.

Hyundai Grander 2017 received a wide range of engines. The base engine is an atmospheric, 2.4-liter hexadecimal (DOHC) engine, operating on gasoline and having a distributed injection and adjustable gas distribution phases. As a result, it develops 190 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 241 Nm of peak thrust at 4,000 rpm. Next comes a 2.2-litre e-VGT turbo-diesel unit with a battery-powered system and 16 valves. All this allows to reach 202 “horses” at 3 800 rpm and 441 Nm of torque at 1 750-2 750 rpm.
The third in the list is a gasoline atmospheric unit, which received six cylinders with a V-shaped arrangement and volume of 3.0 liters, as well as direct fuel supply, 24-valve structure of gas distribution mechanism and phase rotation at the inlet and outlet. The V-shaped “six” produces 266 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 308 Nm of torque at 5,300 rpm.
“Top” versions have a 3.3-liter V-shaped “six” division of Lambda II, which has direct gasoline injection, 24 valves and technology to change the timing of gas distribution. With this, you can achieve 290 “horses” at 6,400 rpm and 344 Nm of torque at 5,200 rpm.
The Hybrid version completes the list of engines, equipped with a 4-cylinder, 2.4-liter gasoline powered engine, which develops about 159 horsepower and 206 Nm of available recoil. At the same time, the engine is powered by a 52 hp electric motor with 205 Nm and a lithium-ion traction battery with a capacity of 1.75 kWh.
In order to accelerate to a speed of 100 km/h, the sedan takes 7.4-9.7 seconds and the maximum speed is 213-230 kilometers per hour. It differs from the machine readings by a certain version. Variants with gasoline engines “eat” about 8.3 to 10.7 liters for every 100 km in mixed mode. The diesel engine requires no more than 6.5 liters, and the hybrid version can fit into 6.2 liters.
Transmission VI generation
The starting gasoline version and hybrid version were synchronized with the six-band automatic transmission and transmission designed only for the front drive. Other engines received an 8-speed automatic transmission.
Carriage VI generation
Hyundai Grandeur of the sixth generation has one “trolley” with Kia Cadenza/K7 and has a longitudinally based power plant and abundant use of high-strength steel in the body structure. The sedan is equipped with independent suspension on all wheels with a spring-lever structure and transverse stabilizers. The body strength of the frontal collision was increased by 34 percent, while the torsional stiffness of the body was increased by 23.2 percent.

The delivery of a new Korean sedan is in question. At the same time in the home country, you have to pay at least $26600 for the starting gasoline version. The diesel version will cost from $31000.
