Sportage QL

Verdict

Buy a 2019-2021 Sportage with the 1.6 CRDi diesel or the 1.6 T-GDI petrol and a full service record: if first registered after November 2019, it still carries part of Kia's seven-year warranty. Skip the 1.7 CRDi at 85 kW (115 PS). Expect about €10,900 (AutoScout24 median, November 2026).

Used: AutoScout24 asking prices in eight EU countries, November 2026, whole generation (10th-90th percentile). New: ADAC list price in Germany for the cheapest version at launch. A real price depends on year, mileage, engine and condition.

Unusually for a compact SUV of its age, the Sportage QL can still come with factory warranty: Kia's seven-year, 150,000 km cover passes to the next owner. That makes a 2020 or 2021 car with a Kia service record the smartest buy. The whole generation has a median asking price of about €10,900 in November 2026.

Why the seven-year warranty changes the maths

Kia's warranty runs for seven years or 150,000 km and covers parts and labour for manufacturing defects. According to Kia, it is valid in more than 20 European countries and transfers to later owners without any paperwork, as long as the car has been maintained regularly. Tyres and brake pads are excluded as wear items.

The fine print matters for a used buyer. Kia Ireland explains that a late or missed service does not void the warranty automatically, but a fault blamed on poor maintenance will be refused. Servicing at an independent garage is allowed if it follows the handbook and uses genuine or equivalent parts. Keep every invoice.

Do the date arithmetic before you look at the car. Seven years from first registration means a Sportage registered in December 2019 is covered until December 2026; a car registered in mid-2021 keeps its cover into 2028, provided it stays under 150,000 km. A 2016-2018 car has none left, so its price should reflect that. This is the clearest difference from the mechanically identical Hyundai Tucson, whose five-year cover has already run out; the used Hyundai Tucson guide covers the twin from the Hyundai side.

Sportage QL versions and the 2018 facelift

The fourth Sportage reached UK showrooms in February 2016; recall records show production started on 27 October 2015. Kia revised it in August 2018 with a styling update, a 1.6 CRDi in place of the old 1.7 CRDi, and a 48-volt mild hybrid with an eight-speed automatic on the 2.0 CRDi at 136 kW (185 PS). From October 2019, all diesels had mild-hybrid technology, and Kia simplified the trims in May 2020. The details of the update are in the Sportage 2018 facelift article, and the Sportage QL generation page has the full specification.

Engines and gearboxes

Engine kW (PS) Years Gearbox and drive Who it suits

Petrol 1.6 T-GDI 130 (177) 2016-2021 6-speed manual or 7-speed DCT, 2WD or AWD Performance, petrol automatic
Diesel 1.7 CRDi 85 (115) 2016-2018 Manual Skip: weaker than the 1.6 CRDi
Diesel 1.7 CRDi 104 (141) 2016-2018 7-speed DCT Pre-facelift diesel automatic
Diesel 1.6 CRDi 85 (115), 100 (136) 2018-2021 Manual or automatic; AWD with DCT only Best all-round diesel
Diesel 2.0 CRDi 100 (136), 136 (185) 2016-2021 Automatic: 6-speed, then 8-speed on the 185 PS from 2018 Towing, long distances

Auto Express calls the 1.6 CRDi a big step up from the 1.7 CRDi and the 1.6 T-GDI much livelier than the non-turbo 1.6 GDI. It also says the eight-speed automatic on the facelift 2.0 CRDi is significantly smoother than the earlier six-speed. The UK market mix gives an idea of what is out there: about 60% petrol, one car in three automatic, and only a third with four-wheel drive.

ADAC tested the 1.6 T-GDI GT-Line AWD with the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox in June 2016. The car scored a 2.5 overall, but the gearbox drew criticism: it interrupted traction briefly when shifting, shifted slowly, held gears too long and responded late to the throttle and paddles. Test one in town traffic before you commit. A Hyundai service bulletin for the same seven-speed unit in the Tucson covers low-speed judder with a software update and, if needed, a new clutch pack.

GT-Line and the other trims

GT-Line is the trim many buyers look for. In the UK, GT-Line is a sportier version of the entry "2" trim, which already has 17-inch alloys, cruise control, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats and an eight-inch touchscreen with navigation. GT-Line S adds a powered tailgate, ventilated front seats and a JBL sound system. In Germany the range started with Attract and Edition 7.

The sporty look has costs. ADAC found that the sport suspension and 19-inch wheels of its GT-Line test car hurt ride comfort. Autoblog.nl warns that GT-Line wheels are often kerbed, and Auto Express says the 1.6 CRDi on 19-inch wheels uses about 5.9 l/100 km (47.9 mpg) against 5.4 l/100 km (52.3 mpg) on 17-inch wheels.

Reliability record

UK owners rated the QL highly when it was young: it topped the 2019 Driver Power used-car survey, ahead of 99 other models. By 2023 it had dropped to 19th overall and 52nd for reliability. A German specialist guide reports that ADAC breakdown figures sit in the green range, with model year 2019 slightly worse, and that the diesels are reliable with a complete service history. ADAC's breakdown index for the Hyundai Tucson, which shares the engines, fell from 18.2 for 2015 cars to 5.3 for 2019 cars.

The most serious documented issue is a recall. The power circuit of the ABS and ESP hydraulic unit was insufficiently fused on cars built from 27 October 2015 to 7 October 2020, with a risk of a cable fire in the engine bay; 6,996 cars were affected in Austria alone. Auto Express states that this generation was never recalled in the UK, so check the status by VIN in the country where the car was first sold.

Running costs, servicing and towing

Auto Express quotes about 5.4 l/100 km (52.3 mpg) for the 1.6 CRDi on 17-inch wheels and about 7.8 l/100 km (36.2 mpg) for the 1.6 GDI. ADAC measured 8.6 l/100 km for the 1.6 T-GDI AWD DCT in its 2016 EcoTest, against Kia's 7.5 l/100 km, and gave it two of five EcoTest stars.

Auto Express gives a 12-month or 20,000-mile (roughly 32,000 km) service interval for most engines, halved to 10,000 miles (roughly 16,000 km) for the 1.6 T-GDI. Brake fluid is changed every two years. Auto Express lists a timing belt for the 1.6 CRDi and chains elsewhere, while its Tucson guide calls every engine in the twin chain-driven, so read the handbook for the exact car.

For towing, Auto Express gives up to 1,400 kg for front-wheel-drive manual entry models and up to 2,200 kg for the most capable all-wheel-drive versions. The 1.6 T-GDI is limited to 1,600 kg even with four-wheel drive, which matches ADAC's test figure. Boot space is 491 litres, or 439 litres on mild hybrids, according to Auto Express.

What a Sportage QL costs in 2026

Germany's ADAC list price for the cheapest Sportage QL was €19,990 at launch in 2016. Across about 3,900 AutoScout24 listings in November 2026, the median asking price was about €10,900. The middle 80% of cars were priced between about €9,000 and €16,000 in November 2026.

That wide spread is mostly age and warranty. High-mileage 2016 1.6 GDI cars fill the bottom, while 2020-2021 facelift cars with remaining warranty, automatic gearboxes or the T-GDI engine sit at the top. What a given car is worth still depends on its year, mileage, engine and condition. For the money, a used Nissan Qashqai is slightly cheaper but has a weaker breakdown record; the most reliable SUVs list widens the search.

How to shop for one

Ask a Kia dealer to read the VIN: it shows remaining warranty, open recalls and dealer service history in one step. Check that the service intervals were kept, because that decides any warranty claim. Look at the tyres; Auto Express and Autoblog.nl both report that the factory tyres wear quickly, and many owners switched brands. Inspect the paint for blistering, the headlamp glass for cracks, and the electric parking brake for warnings. On a manual, make sure the clutch does not slip.

Common problems

  • ABS/ESP hydraulic unit power circuit, fire risk (recall) 2015–2020Severity: Critical

No warning; an insufficiently fused circuit can short-circuit and set fire to wiring under the bonnet.

Fix: Free recall: the fusing is modified and cars with an electric parking brake get a software update, about 30 minutes.

Questions and answers

Does the Kia seven-year warranty transfer to a used buyer?

Yes. Kia says the 7-year/150,000 km warranty passes to later owners without paperwork if the car was maintained regularly. The clock runs from first registration, so in November 2026 only cars registered after November 2019 still have cover.

Which Sportage QL engine is best?

The 1.6 CRDi diesel at 100 kW (136 PS), introduced in 2018, is the best all-rounder, and the 1.6 T-GDI at 130 kW (177 PS) is the petrol choice. Auto Express rates the old 1.7 CRDi and the non-turbo 1.6 GDI as weaker.

Is the Sportage the same as the Hyundai Tucson?

Under the skin it is very close: the QL uses the Tucson TL's engines, gearboxes and platform. Kia designed its own body and trims, and for a used buyer the transferable seven-year Kia warranty is what really separates the two.

Is the GT-Line worth paying extra for?

Only if you like the looks and the equipment. GT-Line adds sporty styling, but ADAC found the sport suspension and 19-inch wheels hurt ride comfort, and Auto Express shows higher fuel use on larger wheels.

How much is a used Sportage QL in 2026?

AutoScout24 asking prices in November 2026 show a median of about €10,900, with most cars between about €9,000 and €16,000. Cars with remaining warranty and the T-GDI or automatic gearboxes cost the most.
