How we check the fit
- Length to spare = garage length − car length.
- Room on each side = (garage width − car width) ÷ 2, with the car parked in the middle.
- Headroom = garage height − car height (plus a roof box or rack, if you add one); door margin = door opening − car width (or height).
- Can you open the doors? A front door is about a metre long: the room beside the car decides how far it opens before it touches the wall — the drawing shows the angle.
The car "fits" when every margin is zero or more, and "fits with room to get out" when the room on each side is at least what you asked for. Car dimensions come from the 1cars catalog: width is quoted without mirrors, as most makers publish it, so the door check adds the mirrors you enter (typically 15–25 cm for both) and tells you when they must be folded. Height is usually quoted without roof rails or a roof box. Two cars side by side need both widths plus room to get out between them and at each wall.
Measure the garage correctly
Measure inside, wall to wall, at the narrowest point: shelves, a workbench, pillars, the door mechanism and a sloping floor all take space. For a tilting or sectional door, measure the clear opening when the door is fully open. Measure in centimetres, metres, inches or feet and inches — switch the units at the top of the form.
Frequently asked questions
How much room do I need to open the car doors?
About 60 cm (2 ft) to get out comfortably, 40 cm if you squeeze, and 80 cm or more to lift a child out. Open the driver's door to where you can comfortably get out and measure from the car body — then use that figure in the "room beside the car" field.
Does the car width include the mirrors?
No. Catalog widths are body widths without mirrors, as most manufacturers publish them. Mirrors usually add 15–25 cm for both, so fold them or measure them when the door opening is tight.
Can I use inches or feet?
Yes. Switch the units to inches or feet and inches at the top of the form; feet can be typed as 18' 6" or 18.5. The result is shown in the same units.
