Verdict Opinion
The Patriot is the tougher, more traditional off-roader, with two rigid axles, a standard low range and more interior space. The Hover H5 is the more car-like of the two, with independent front suspension, disc brakes all round, a diesel option and more ground clearance.
Both trade refinement for ruggedness and low cost, so the best example is the one with the most complete service history.

The Great Wall Hover H5 and the UAZ Patriot are body-on-frame SUVs whose production runs overlap from 2010 to 2020. Both are five-door wagons with a ladder frame, a rigid rear axle and selectable four-wheel drive, aimed at buyers who want a robust vehicle for bad roads rather than a soft-roader.
They come from very different traditions. The Hover H5, built by Great Wall Motors in China, is a restyled development of the Hover H3 with a Mitsubishi-derived petrol engine. The Patriot, built by UAZ in Russia since 2005 as the replacement for the UAZ Simbir, keeps two rigid axles.
Engineering, design and everyday use
Engineering
The Hover H5 has independent double-wishbone front suspension with torsion bars, a live rear axle and ventilated discs all round. Its engines are a 2.4 petrol with 100 kW (136 PS) in Australian specification and a 2.0 turbodiesel with 110 kW (150 PS) and 310 Nm. Manual H5s have high and low ranges; the automatic diesel does not.
The Patriot uses rigid axles front and rear, with coil springs at the front and leaf springs at the rear, plus front discs and rear drums. Its 2.7 ZMZ-409 petrol produced about 94 kW (128 PS) on the 2014 facelift, 99 kW (135 PS) from 2016 and 110 kW (150 PS) from 2019. A two-speed transfer case is standard, electronically controlled since 2013.
Size and practicality
The Patriot is the larger vehicle: 4,750 mm (187.0 in) long, 1,900 mm (74.8 in) wide and 1,910 mm (75.2 in) tall on a 2,760 mm (108.7 in) wheelbase. The Hover H5 is 4,649 mm (183.0 in) long, 1,810 mm (71.3 in) wide and 1,735 mm (68.3 in) tall on a 2,700 mm (106.3 in) wheelbase. The H5 has the higher ground clearance at 240 mm (9.4 in) against 210 mm (8.3 in), and quotes 810 L (28.6 cu ft) of boot space. Braked towing is 1,700 kg (3,748 lb) for the H5 and 1,500 kg (3,307 lb) for the Patriot, rising to 2,500 kg (5,512 lb) for EU-specification Patriots from 2019.
Safety and refinement
Neither has a Euro NCAP rating. The Australian Hover H5 had two front airbags and ABS but no stability control; the Patriot gained airbags and ESP for the 2017 model year. Independent reviews of both were critical of on-road manners: an Australian review of the H5 gave it 1.5 out of 5, and Czech tests described the Patriot's handling as dated and truck-like.
