Verdict Opinion

The XC60 is the choice for buyers who put safety and electric commuting first. Its plug-in hybrid has the higher system output and a usable electric range, and the calm cabin suits long journeys.

The Q5 is the more varied range. It offers a six-cylinder diesel and petrol engines up to the SQ5, a coupé-roofed Sportback since 2021, and a brand-new third generation for buyers who want the latest technology.

Which one to choose ↓

The Audi Q5 and the Volvo XC60 were born in the same year. Volvo showed its production car at Geneva in 2008 after a concept at Detroit in 2007; Audi presented the Q5 at the Beijing show in 2008 and began European deliveries that October. Their main rivals are the same two cars, the BMW X3 and the Mercedes-Benz GLC.

Since then Volvo has needed one generation change and Audi two. The second XC60 arrived at Geneva in 2017 on the SPA platform. The Q5 FY followed at Paris in 2016, and a third Q5 on the new PPC platform was unveiled on 2 September 2024.

Audi Q5 vs Volvo XC60: platforms, engines, plug-ins and safety

Where they come from

Volvo assembled the first XC60 at its Ghent plant in Belgium, using the P3 platform it shared with the 2007 Land Rover Freelander. The second is produced in Sweden at Torslanda and in China at Chengdu. Audi built the first Q5 at Ingolstadt and moved the second generation to a new plant at San José Chiapa in Mexico, where production started on 30 September 2016. The FY rides on a 2,819 mm wheelbase; the first XC60 had 2,774 mm.

Four- and six-cylinder engines

The facelifted Q5 FY offered four-cylinder mild hybrids with 150 kW (204 PS) as the 40 TDI and 195 kW (265 PS) as the 45 TFSI. Some markets also had a 3.0 V6 TDI with 183 kW and 600 Nm in some markets. The third generation lists a 2.0 TFSI with 200 kW (272 PS), a 2.0 TDI with 150 kW and the SQ5 with 270 kW (367 PS). The second XC60 launched with petrol engines ranging between the T4 (140 kW) and the T6 (235 kW), and with diesels of 140 and 173 kW. The first generation also had a 3.0-litre turbo six, and its T6 R-Design reached 242 kW.

Plug-in hybrids

Here Volvo has the stronger card. The T8 Recharge of 2022 combines a 233 kW petrol engine with a 106 kW electric motor for 339 kW (461 PS), and its 18.7 kWh battery gives about 77 km of electric range. What that saves depends on your electricity and fuel prices, which our fuel cost comparison takes into account. The Q5 55 TFSI e has 270 kW (367 PS) and 500 Nm.

Space and drive

Audi quotes 550 litres of luggage space for the facelifted FY and 1,550 litres once the rear backrests are folded. The first XC60 had 495 and about 1,450 litres. Audi's quattro comes in two forms in the facelifted FY: the ultra system on the petrol versions, which engages the rear axle when needed, and a Torsen centre differential on the V6 diesel.

Safety and sales

Safety is Volvo's home ground. City Safety, Volvo's automatic braking system, made its debut on the XC60, and in Euro NCAP's 2008 test it achieved full marks, 37 points, in the frontal and side crash tests. The second generation scored 98 % for adult occupants in 2017, against 93 % for the Q5 FY in the same year. Volvo sold a record 230,853 XC60s worldwide in 2024, and no Volvo has sold better since 2009.
