Verdict Opinion

As a new car the decision has been made for you: the Focus is out of production, and the Golf remains with a wide choice of petrol, diesel, mild-hybrid and plug-in versions. As a used buy, the comparison is closer than the badges suggest.

The Focus offers more space for the money, especially as an estate, and many drivers still prefer its steering. The Golf usually asks a higher price on the used market, but it offers a plug-in hybrid and a newer generation with factory support. If you plan to keep the car for many years, the Golf's continued production and parts support are a real advantage.

Which one to choose ↓

For a quarter of a century road testers praised the Ford Focus for its steering and chassis, and the Volkswagen Golf for its cabin quality and solid feel. The rivalry began in 1998, when Ford replaced the Escort with the first Focus and won the 1999 European Car of the Year title with it.

The Golf had a long head start: Volkswagen presented the first one in May 1974, and across eight generations more than 37 million have been sold. Ford built around 12 million Focus cars in four generations and ended production at Saarlouis in Germany in 2025. The current Golf therefore no longer has a new Focus to fight. For buyers of used cars, though, the duel is very much alive.

Ford Focus vs VW Golf: size, engines and hot hatches

Size and packaging

The last Focus is the bigger car. The fourth generation (2018–2025) is 4,378 mm long as a hatchback, 1,825 mm wide and rides on a 2,700 mm wheelbase. The Golf Mk8 (since 2019) measures 4,284 mm in length and 1,789 mm in width, with a 2,636 mm wheelbase. Both were also sold as estates: the Focus estate is 4,668 mm long and offers up to 1,650 litres with the rear seats folded, while the Golf Variant measures 4,633 mm.

Focus EcoBoost against Golf TSI and eHybrid

Ford relied on small three-cylinder EcoBoost petrol engines. In the fourth generation the 1.0 EcoBoost Hybrid, with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, came with 92 kW (125 PS) or 114 kW (155 PS); diesels were the 1.5 and 2.0 EcoBlue. Volkswagen's Mk8 range runs from the 1.0 eTSI with 81 kW (110 PS) through the 1.5 TSI and eTSI with 110 kW (150 PS) to the 2.0 TDI. The decisive difference is electrification. The Golf has two plug-in hybrids: the GTE, with 180 kW (245 PS) and later 200 kW (272 PS), and the eHybrid with 150 kW (204 PS). The Focus never had a plug-in version.

Performance versions

Both families produced famous hot hatches. The fourth-generation Focus ST uses a 2.3-litre EcoBoost with 206 kW (280 PS), and there was even an ST diesel with 140 kW (190 PS). The previous Focus RS sent 261 kW to all four wheels. The Golf answers with the GTI, the GTI Clubsport and the all-wheel-drive Golf R, which in the Mk8 has 235 kW in our catalogue data.

Safety and production

Euro NCAP awarded five stars to the fourth-generation Focus in 2018 and to the Golf Mk8 in 2019. The Focus was built at Saarlouis until November 2025; the Golf continues in Wolfsburg after the facelift of January 2024, which brought back physical buttons on the steering wheel.
