About Tatra
Tatra is a Czech vehicle maker in Kopřivnice and one of the oldest car makers in the world. It began as Ignác Šustala's carriage works, founded in 1850, built the Präsident – the first car in Central Europe – in 1897 and adopted the Tatra name in 1919.
Under the engineer Hans Ledwinka, Tatra pioneered the backbone-tube chassis with swing axles (Tatra 11, 1923) and streamlined rear-engined cars such as the Tatra 77, 87 and 603. Passenger car production ended in 1999; Tatra now builds heavy off-road trucks such as the 815 and Phoenix.
