Our verdict · Felix Hartmann
- For economy and a new car: the Mazda2 Hybrid, the only Mazda2 now sold new in Europe.
- For a lighter, simpler car: a DJ with the 1.5 Skyactiv-G; manual cars from 2020 add the M Hybrid system.
- For a cheap used buy: a DE, the 2008 World Car of the Year.
The Mazda2 is Mazda's B-segment supermini, sold in Europe since 2003 and known in Japan as the Demio until 2019. Three generations of Mazda's own car have been built (DY, DE and DJ), and since 2022 Europe has also had the Mazda2 Hybrid, a rebadged Toyota Yaris. The petrol DJ left the European range in early 2025, so new European Mazda2s are now hybrids built by Toyota in France.
In short
- Generations: DY (2002-2007), DE (2007-2014), DJ (since 2014) and the Toyota-based Mazda2 Hybrid (XP210, since 2022).
- European engines from 50 kW (68 PS) in the 1.4 diesel to 85 kW (116 PS) in the Mazda2 Hybrid.
- Euro NCAP: four stars for the DJ (2015) and five stars for the Mazda2 Hybrid (2020 rating of the Yaris).
- In Spain the Mazda2 Hybrid started at EUR 25,850 in 2024 (Prime-Line).

DY (2002-2007): the tall Fiesta relative
The first Mazda2 used Ford's B3 platform, shared with the fifth-generation Ford Fiesta, and was developed under chief engineer Kiyoshi Fujiwara. European production started at Ford's Almussafes plant near Valencia on 20 January 2003. ABS and EBD were standard; stability control was an option. European trims were S, TS and TS2, renamed Antares and Capella in 2004.

DE (2007-2014): lighter and World Car of the Year
The second generation was shown at the Geneva Motor Show in 2007, styled under Ikuo Maeda. It was lighter and smaller than the DY and dropped the tall roof. A three-door followed for Europe at Geneva in 2008; a saloon was made in Thailand and China for other markets. The DE was named World Car of the Year 2008, and a facelift reached Europe at the end of 2010.

Gearboxes were a five-speed manual and a four-speed automatic. In Japan the Demio became the first car with a Skyactiv engine in 2011, a 62 kW (84 PS) 1.3.

DJ (since 2014): Skyactiv and Kodo design
The third Mazda2 was previewed by the Hazumi concept at Geneva in 2014 and went into production at Hofu in July 2014; in the UK it arrived in 2015. It uses Mazda's Skyactiv body and chassis and the Kodo design language. It is longer and wider than the DE but has less rear-seat room. The DJ was Japan Car of the Year 2014-2015. In North America Toyota sold it as the Scion iA and Yaris iA/Yaris sedan until 2020.
The 2019 update added revised suspension, adaptive headlights and G-Vectoring Control Plus; in Japan the Demio name was dropped in September 2019. For Europe Mazda dropped the diesel in 2019 and added its M Hybrid system to manual cars in 2020: a belt-driven starter-generator and a capacitor recover braking energy. A second update was revealed on 27 January 2023 with a new front and rear, new colours and new seats.

In February 2025 Mazda ended UK sales of the petrol Mazda2, and the car is no longer built for Europe. It continues in other markets.

Mazda2 Hybrid (since 2022): a Yaris with a Mazda badge
Production of the Mazda2 Hybrid began in December 2021 and the first UK customers received cars in May 2022. It is the Toyota Yaris Hybrid with Mazda badges and minor styling changes, built in Toyota's French plant at Onnaing. The 1.5 three-cylinder, 68 kW (92 PS), and an electric motor, 59 kW (80 PS), give a system output of 85 kW (116 PS); a CVT-type automatic drives the front wheels. Toyota keeps the more powerful 96 kW (130 PS) version for its own Yaris. A 2024 update brought styling closer to Mazda's other models, Mazda's usual trim names and, on the top Homura Plus, a 10.5-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument display.

Reliability and known issues
The Skyactiv-G 1.5 petrol is naturally aspirated, with port injection, and the M Hybrid system uses a capacitor rather than a high-voltage battery. We have not found sourced data on recurring Mazda2 faults, so we do not list any here.
