Origins: Dongfeng's premium brand

Dongfeng itself goes back to the Second Automobile Works, planned in 1965 and founded in 1969 in what is now Shiyan. The group is now based in Wuhan and runs several electric brands, among them Dongfeng eπ, Nammi and M-Hero. The group's own story is told in the history of Dongfeng, and its cars are in the Dongfeng catalogue.

Voyah, called Lántú in Chinese, was founded in April 2019 to develop premium electric cars. On 17 July 2020 Dongfeng unveiled the logo at the Big House Contemporary Art Center in Wuhan. In September 2020 the brand made its debut at the Beijing Auto Show with the i-Free and i-Land concepts. Production was set up in the factory of the former Dongfeng Renault joint venture, which was repurposed after Renault left.

The Free: electric and range-extender

The Voyah Free, a mid-size SUV developed from the i-Free concept, was launched on 18 December 2020, and series production began in late January 2021. It shares the ESSA architecture with the later Dreamer. The pure-electric version had an 88 kWh battery and 255 kW with rear-wheel drive, and a later all-wheel-drive version reached about 500 kW and 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds.

The range-extender version proved more important. A 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder of 60 kW rated output works only as a generator. It charges a battery of 33 kWh at first, later 39 and 43 kWh, while two motors drive the wheels with about 500 kW and 1,000 Nm. Voyah quoted 860 km of NEDC range for this version against 500 km for the pure-electric car, and 0–100 km/h in 4.6 seconds.

Chinese sales show how buyers chose. In 2022 the Free sold 11,826 cars, 3,456 of them electric and 8,380 with the range extender. By 2024 the split was 142 to 13,066, and in 2025 only 17 of 29,816 Frees sold in China were pure-electric. The second-generation Free+ was revealed at Auto Shanghai in April 2025 and launched on 12 July 2025. It is offered only with a range extender, now a 95 kW engine with a 43.2 kWh battery. The rear motor has 215 kW and the all-wheel-drive version 350 kW in total, and the battery can be charged from 20 to 80% in about 20 minutes. On the WLTP cycle the electric range is 235 km with rear-wheel drive and 196 km with all-wheel drive. The rear-wheel-drive car weighs 2,250 kg, which gives about 96 W per kg, a ratio the power-to-weight calculator can compare with any other car. Prices started at RMB 219,900 in China at the July 2025 launch, and 11,583 firm orders arrived within 15 minutes.

Dreamer and Passion

The Dreamer, a large luxury MPV with a 2+2+3 seat layout, was first shown at the 2021 Guangzhou Auto Show and went on sale in China in March 2022. The electric version has 160 kW and batteries of 82 to 108.7 kWh. The plug-in hybrid combines a 1.5-litre turbo engine with a 25.57 kWh battery and reaches 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds. It sold 6,933 units in 2022. A facelift shown on 15 August 2024 added Huawei's Qiankun driver-assistance system and HarmonyOS cockpit.

The Passion, Voyah's first saloon, was introduced in December 2022. The full-size car is 5,088 mm long with a 3,000 mm wheelbase. The electric version, on sale from April 2023, has two motors with 375 kW and 730 Nm and reaches 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds. Its 108.7 kWh battery gives 730 km on the Chinese CLTC cycle. That is about 6.7 km per kWh on that cycle, and other battery and range figures can be compared in the EV range and battery data. The plug-in hybrid of December 2023 combines a 1.5-litre turbo engine with two motors for 390 kW and 202 km of WLTP electric range. Chinese sales rose from 4,965 in 2023 to 6,349 in 2024, when 5,510 were plug-in hybrids.

Huawei, exports and the stock listing

Voyah entered Norway in June 2022 and Israel in April 2023, announced its expansion into Spain and Portugal in January 2024 and launched in Italy in April 2024. On 22 January 2024 it signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Huawei for intelligent vehicles under the "Huawei Inside" model. The 100,000th Voyah, a Dreamer, was built on 9 April 2024.

The range grew further with the Courage mid-size electric SUV in 2024 and, in 2025, the plug-in Passion L, the Taishan SUV and the Free+. The Passion L is slightly longer and wider than the original and is offered only as a plug-in hybrid, with a 110 kW engine and motors of 150 and 230 kW for 490 kW in total and about 300 km of electric range. The Passion S and the Taishan X8 followed in 2026. On 18 March 2026 Voyah made its debut on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Voyah models are listed in the Voyah catalogue.
