Which Free to choose and its rivals
Our verdict · Felix Hartmann
The rear-wheel-drive REV is the most sensible choice for most buyers. It offers 318 km of electric range in the ADAC data, a petrol generator for long trips and the lowest price, €59,990 in 2025. The EV AWD is much faster and has 500 km of WLTP range, but at €76,990 (2024) it costs €17,000 more in the German list. It also charges at only 100 kW. Both can tow 2,000 kg.
In size the Free is close to the Tesla Model Y and larger electric SUVs such as the BMW iX. The compare section sets their dimensions side by side, the fuel cost calculator helps to estimate the REV's running costs, and other Voyah models are in the Voyah catalogue.
The Voyah Free is a large SUV from Dongfeng's premium brand Voyah, launched in China on 18 December 2020 and built in Wuhan since January 2021. It comes as a range-extended electric car, in which a 1.5-litre turbo engine charges the battery, and in some markets as a pure battery-electric car. In Germany the ADAC catalogue lists the Free EV AWD since October 2024 and the range-extender REV since June 2025, at €59,990 to €76,990. A second-generation Free+ went on sale in China in July 2025.
Voyah was founded by Dongfeng Motor Corporation in April 2019 and presented its logo in Wuhan on 17 July 2020. The brand made its public debut at the Beijing motor show in September 2020, where the Free appeared as the i-Free concept. The company is based in Wuhan, Hubei. Its range now covers the Free SUV, the Dreamer MPV, the Passion saloon, the Courage and the large Taishan SUV. The 100,000th Voyah, a Dreamer, left the line on 9 April 2024. Abroad Voyah started in Norway in June 2022, then Israel in April 2023 and Italy in April 2024. The history of the parent company is in the article on Dongfeng Motor.

Launch and first generation in China
After the concept at the Beijing show in September 2020, the Free was launched on 18 December 2020, and series production in Wuhan began in late January 2021. The early range-extender car combined a 1.5-litre turbo engine, with a peak output of 80 kW and a thermal efficiency of 41.07 %, with two electric motors. System output was 500 kW and 1,000 Nm, enough for 0–100 km/h in 4.6 seconds and 200 km/h. The battery grew from 33 kWh (2021–2023) to 39 kWh (2023–2025) and 43 kWh for the 2025 "318" version, and China's NEDC figure for total range was 860 km.
The battery-electric Free had an 88 kWh battery at first and 510 kW with 1,040 Nm in all-wheel-drive form. Its NEDC range was 505 km for the rear-wheel-drive car of 2021–2023. In China the EV was dropped in August 2023, leaving the range extender as the only choice, but a 106 kWh EV returned for 2025 with 631 km NEDC. A limited DNA edition with 510 kW reached 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds.

How the range extender works
In the REV, the electric motors drive the car and the petrol engine works as a generator that keeps the battery charged. In the Free+ it has no mechanical connection to the wheels at all. For the German REV the ADAC lists a 1,499 cc four-cylinder turbo with 110 kW (150 PS) and 220 Nm. It also gives a 56-litre tank, 318 km of electric range and 6.2 l/100 km in hybrid mode with an empty battery. That makes the REV a car that covers daily trips on electricity but can still make long journeys with short fuel stops.

Versions sold in Germany
| Version | Drive | Battery | Power | Torque | 0–100 km/h | Electric range (WLTP) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free REV | RWD | 43.0 kWh | 200 kW (272 PS) | 410 Nm | 7.6 s | 318 km |
| Free REV AWD | AWD | 43.0 kWh | 360 kW (490 PS) | - | - | - |
| Free EV AWD | AWD | 106.7 kWh | 360 kW (489 PS) | 720 Nm | 4.4 s | 500 km |
All figures are from the ADAC catalogue. The EV AWD uses 20.2 kWh/100 km on the WLTP cycle and charges at up to 11 kW AC and 100 kW DC. With a battery of more than 100 kWh, a 100 kW peak means long fast-charging stops on trips.

Second generation: the Free+
The second-generation Free, called Free+, was revealed at Auto Shanghai 2025 and launched in China on 12 July 2025, when 11,583 firm orders arrived within 15 minutes. It is 10 mm longer and wider than before, with a 5 mm longer wheelbase.

The generator engine is a new 1.5-litre turbo with 95 kW, and the battery charges from 20 to 80 % in 20 minutes at 3C. Inside are a 10.25-inch instrument display, a 29-inch augmented-reality head-up display, a 15.6-inch touchscreen, a 22-speaker Huawei sound system and a 7-litre refrigerator. Huawei's ADS 4 driver-assistance system uses 29 sensors, including a 192-line lidar.
