Which Taigo to choose

Our verdict · Felix Hartmann

  • For the lowest price: the 1.0 TSI Trend with 70 kW, which ADAC lists below the equivalent T-Cross.
  • For daily commuting with an automatic: the 1.0 TSI 115 with DSG.
  • For a sportier drive: the 1.5 TSI DSG, the only four-cylinder.
  • For a used buy: an early 1.0 TSI 110 from 2021 to 2024, the version that the 85 kW engine replaced in the price list.
  • For maximum boot flexibility: the T-Cross with its sliding rear bench is the better choice, as it offers up to 455 litres.

The Taigo shares its platform with the Volkswagen Polo. Electric options from the brand start with the Volkswagen ID.3. All versions are listed in the Volkswagen catalogue.

The Volkswagen Taigo is a coupé-style small crossover sold in Europe since 2021 and built in Pamplona, Spain, next to the Polo and the T-Cross. It is the European version of the Nivus, which Volkswagen launched in Brazil in May 2020. Volkswagen calls the Taigo the first SUV coupé in the European small car segment. Like the other MQB A0 models it has front-wheel drive only.

From the Nivus to the Taigo

The Nivus made its debut in Brazil on 28 May 2020 as Volkswagen's second small SUV after the T-Cross. It is built at the Anchieta plant in São Bernardo do Campo and reached other South American markets in 2021 and Mexico in December 2021.

The European Taigo followed on 28 July 2021, about a year after the Nivus. In Europe it is positioned alongside the T-Cross, while in South America the Nivus sits below it. The Taigo shares its side doors, windscreen, roof pressing, suspension and most interior parts with the Polo. Its body is longer at the back, however: the European Taigo has a 438-litre boot, while Wikipedia gives 300 litres for the Polo and 415 litres for the Brazilian Nivus. That is 138 litres more than the Polo.

Engines and performance

Version Engine Power Torque Gearbox
1.0 TSI 95 999 cc, 3-cyl. 70 kW (95 PS) 175 Nm 5-speed manual
1.0 TSI 110 999 cc, 3-cyl. 81 kW (110 PS) 200 Nm 6-speed manual or 7-speed DSG
1.0 TSI 115 (from late 2024) 999 cc, 3-cyl. 85 kW (115 PS) — manual or 7-speed DSG
1.5 TSI 150 1,498 cc, 4-cyl. 110 kW (150 PS) 250 Nm 6-speed manual or 7-speed DSG

The 85 kW engine appears in the ADAC price list from November 2024 and replaced the 81 kW version there. In South America the Nivus uses a 1.0 200 TSI with 87 kW (118 PS) on petrol and 96 kW (130 PS) on ethanol, combined with a six-speed automatic.

Autonotizen.de tested the 1.5 TSI Style with DSG in January 2022. The car accelerated to 100 km/h in 8.3 seconds and has a factory top speed of 212 km/h. Real consumption in the test was 7.5 l/100 km.

Design and dimensions

The sloping roofline makes the Taigo 1,493 mm tall, about 9 cm lower than the T-Cross. Length is 4,266–4,270 mm, width 1,750–1,757 mm and the wheelbase 2,566 mm. Autonotizen.de measured its car at 4,266 × 1,757 × 1,518 mm, so the height depends on the version and roof equipment. Its boot holds just under 440 litres, according to the same test.

  • The Taigo is 158 mm longer and 90–96 mm lower than the T-Cross on a 15 mm longer wheelbase.
  • In the July 2026 ADAC lists the Taigo 1.0 TSI Trend is €1,720 cheaper than the T-Cross 1.0 TSI Trend with the same 70 kW engine.
  • Kerb weight per kW of the 1.5 TSI: 11.7 kg per kW (1,292 kg and 110 kW, the heaviest Taigo in the Wikipedia range).

Safety and reliability

Euro NCAP awarded the Taigo five stars in 2022 as a partner model of the Polo, without a separate full test. Latin NCAP tested the Nivus with six airbags in 2022 and gave five stars, with 92 percent for adults and children alike, 49 percent for pedestrians and 85 percent for safety assistance.

ADAC recorded 2.3 breakdowns per 1,000 vehicles for Taigos registered in 2022 and 1.6 for 2023. Values for 2021 were not published.

The Nivus in South America

The Nivus is sold in a wider range of versions than the Taigo. Export markets such as Argentina and Uruguay received a 170 TSI version with a 71 kW (95 hp) engine and a five-speed manual gearbox. Mexico has imported the Nivus from Brazil since December 2021. All Nivus and Taigo models share the MQB A0 base, and none of them has all-wheel drive.

Sales show how much larger the South American market is for this body style. Brazil registered 52,106 Nivus in 2023, 55,922 in 2024 and 48,763 in 2025, while Argentina reached 10,854 in 2025.

Sales in Europe and Turkey

Wikipedia gives 66,698 European registrations for 2022 and 1,688 for the launch year 2021. In Turkey sales rose from 6,149 in 2022 to 10,334 in 2023 and 14,115 in 2024.
