Which Song Pro to choose
Our verdict · Felix Hartmann
- For mostly electric daily driving: a 2026 car with the 26.6 or 34.3 kWh battery, which covers 220–301 km on electricity in the CLTC cycle.
- For the lowest price: the 2026 18.3 kWh version, the cheapest trim at 97,800 yuan.
- For performance: the early DM with four-wheel drive and 238 kW, a rarer used car.
- For a used buy: prefer cars from the September 2024 facelift onward, with the DM-i 5.0 system.
The BYD Song Pro is a compact SUV made since 2019 and today sold mainly as a DM-i plug-in hybrid. It started with petrol, electric and early plug-in hybrid versions, then switched to BYD's DM-i system in 2022. The 2026 model has a 1.5-litre engine and a 120 kW electric motor, with batteries of up to 34.3 kWh. Several export markets know it as the Sealion 5 DM-i.

Where the Song Pro fits
BYD sells several SUVs under the Song name. In China the Song Pro sits below the Song L DM-i, and its counterpart in BYD's Ocean Series is the Sealion 05 DM-i of 2024. In Latin America BYD placed it as a cheaper alternative to the Song Plus. The company's background is covered in our history of BYD.
Launch in 2019: petrol, EV and DM
The Song Pro arrived in July 2019 with three very different powertrains. The petrol model used a 1.5-litre turbo engine with 113 kW (154 PS). The EV carried a 71 kWh ternary lithium battery and a 135 kW (184 PS) motor, rated at 502 km on the NEDC cycle.
The first plug-in hybrid, called DM, was the performance version. Its 1.5-litre turbo engine with 118 kW worked with a 120 kW electric motor. Together they gave 238 kW and 525 Nm, four-wheel drive and 0–100 km/h in 6.5 seconds. A 15.7 kWh battery provided 81 km of CLTC electric range.

DM-i: the plug-in hybrid takes over
In December 2021 BYD announced the DM-i system for the 2022 model year. It pairs a 1.5-litre engine with BYD's EHS electric hybrid system and an E-CVT gearbox. The petrol and EV versions were dropped during 2022, which left the DM-i as the only choice.
The first DM-i versions had an 8.3 kWh or 18.3 kWh Blade battery. The smaller one gave 51 km of CLTC electric range, with an 81 kW engine and a 132 kW motor. The larger one offered 110 km and reached 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds. In May 2023 the Champion Edition facelift added 88 mm of length. A 12.9 kWh version with a 145 kW motor and 71 km of range followed. The Honor Edition of March 2024 cut prices by about 15 per cent and added a black paint option.

Second facelift and DM-i 5.0
The second facelift, in September 2024, brought the fifth-generation DM-i system and new styling. BYD claimed a combined range of 1,400 km with full tank and battery. The engine now delivers 74 kW and 126 Nm, while the motor has 120 kW and 210 Nm. Two batteries were offered: 12.9 kWh for 75 km CLTC and 18.3 kWh for 115 km CLTC.
CarNewsChina tested a 2025 car and measured 3.06 litres per 100 km. It also reported an engine thermal efficiency of over 43 per cent. The 2025 model cost 112,800–142,800 yuan in four trims.

The 2026 model: up to 301 km on electricity
From October 2025 to April 2026 BYD launched nine trims of the 2026 Song Pro DM-i. All share the same 4,735 mm body and drivetrain, and differ in battery size and equipment.
| Battery | CLTC electric range | Combined range (CLTC) | 0–100 km/h | Kerb weight | Price (yuan) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 18.3 kWh | 133 km | — | 8.4 s | 1,730 kg | 97,800–120,800 |
| 26.6 kWh | 220 km | 1,600 km | 8.5 s | 1,750 kg | 99,900–125,800 |
| 34.3 kWh | 301 km | 1,735 km | 8.6 s | 1,780 kg | 115,900–129,900 |
Top speed is 180 km/h for every version, and the boot holds 530 to 1,482 litres. The WLTC fuel figures are 1.1, 0.8 and 0.5 l/100 km. For plug-in hybrids these cycle values include the distance driven on battery power. The extra 16 kWh between the smallest and largest battery adds only 50 kg.

Export markets and names
