Verdict Opinion
The Moskvich-2140 is the more powerful and the more fully equipped car of the two, and it stayed in production until July 1988. The VAZ-2101 is lighter, thriftier and has the more modern coil-sprung chassis, and it belongs to a family that was built in millions.
For an enthusiast, the 2140 offers 1970s Soviet styling and a strong aluminium engine, while the 2101 offers the classic Fiat-derived Lada experience in its original form.
— Oleksandr Hnatiuk
The Moskvich-2140 and the VAZ-2101 shared showrooms from 1976, when the 2140 replaced the Moskvich-412, until 1982, when the base 2101 ended. Both are four-door, rear-wheel-drive saloons with a four-speed manual gearbox and an overhead-camshaft four-cylinder engine, and both were exported to Western Europe.
They were built on different foundations. The 2140 is a thorough update of the 408 and 412 body structure, with new panels everywhere except the roof. The VAZ-2101 is a licence-built and heavily modified Fiat 124 that first left the AvtoVAZ line in April 1970. The comparison is between an evolved 1960s Soviet design and a newer Italian-derived one.
Engineering, design and everyday use
Engineering
The Moskvich-2140 uses the UZAM-412 engine: 1,478 cc, aluminium block, overhead camshaft and 55 kW (75 PS) at 5,800 rpm, with about 112 to 115 Nm. The VAZ-2101 has a 1,198 cc engine with a chain-driven overhead camshaft and 44 kW (60 PS) DIN, or 48 kW (65 PS) in the 1.3-litre 21011. A cheaper 2138 version of the Moskvich, built until 1982, used the older 1,358 cc engine with 37 kW (50 PS) because the newer engine was in short supply.
Under the body, the Moskvich keeps a rear axle on leaf springs and front disc brakes. The VAZ uses coil springs all round, with its rigid rear axle located by four trailing arms and a Panhard rod, and front discs with rear drums.
Design and size
The 2140 is the longer car at 4,250 mm (167.3 in), but narrower at 1,550 mm (61.0 in), on a 2,400 mm (94.5 in) wheelbase. The VAZ-2101 is 4,073 mm long and 1,611 mm wide on a 2,424 mm wheelbase. The Moskvich update brought rectangular headlamps, a black plastic grille, flush door handles, hazard warning lights, a heated rear window and front headrests.
Performance and running
Both are quoted at a top speed of 140 km/h (87 mph). The Moskvich reaches 100 km/h in about 19 to 20 seconds, the 1.2-litre VAZ in about 22 seconds. Typical consumption is roughly 9 to 10 L/100 km for the 2140 and about 8.0 L/100 km for the 2101. Ground clearance is generous on both: 173 mm for the Moskvich and 170 mm laden for the VAZ.

Choose the VAZ-2101 if you prefer a lighter car with lower fuel use and coil springs all round, or the original Lada shape that started the whole family.
