Shelby American is an American maker of performance cars founded in 1962 in Venice, California, by Carroll Shelby, the racing driver who won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1959. The company was set up to build the Shelby Cobra, which combined the body of the British AC Ace with a Ford V8.
The Daytona Coupe won GT class titles in 1964–1965, including the 1965 International Championship for GT Manufacturers. In 1965 came the Shelby GT350 Mustang, followed by the Shelby GT500 in 1967. In 1966 the Ford GT40 Mk II, run with Shelby American, won at Daytona, Sebring and Le Mans. In the 1980s Shelby worked with Chrysler and Dodge on cars such as the Omni GLH and GLHS and special versions of the Charger and Dakota. Carroll Shelby himself died in 2012. Today Shelby American is based in Nevada. See also AC, Ford Mustang and Shelby GT350.
