Horch was a German maker of luxury cars founded by August Horch, who set up the company with Salli Herz in Cologne on 14 November 1899. It moved to Reichenbach im Vogtland in 1902 and in 1904 became Horch & Cie. Motorwagenwerke AG in Zwickau, Saxony. In 1909 August Horch was forced out of his own company and founded Audi, registered in 1910.
On 29 June 1932 Horch, Audi, DKW and Wanderer merged to form Auto Union. Its cars included a V12 of 1931–1934, the Horch 830 with a V8 engine and the straight-eight 851 and 853 of 1937–1940. After the Second World War the Zwickau factories were in East Germany and from 1955 to 1958 built the six-cylinder P240, later renamed Sachsenring P240. The brand then lay dormant; its rights passed to Audi in the mid-1980s, and in 2021 Audi revived the name for a flagship A8 in China. Read more: the history of Audi.
