Hindustan Motors was one of India's first car makers. It was founded in 1942 by B. M. Birla of the Birla family in collaboration with Morris Motors, starting at a small assembly plant in Port Okha, Gujarat. In 1948 production moved to the Hind Motor plant in Uttarpara, West Bengal, near Kolkata.

The Landmaster of 1954 was based on the Morris Oxford Series II, and in 1957 it was replaced by the Hindustan Ambassador, based on the Morris Oxford Series III. The Ambassador's basic design stayed largely unchanged until the end of production. In the late 1980s Hindustan added the Contessa, based on the Vauxhall Victor and later fitted with Isuzu engines, and in 1998 it began a joint venture with Mitsubishi in Tiruvallur, near Chennai. Ambassador production ended in May 2014. In 2017 the Ambassador brand and trademarks were sold to the PSA Group, now part of Stellantis. See also Morris and Vauxhall.
