New McLaren McL 820 Confirmed: 750S Successor Arrives in 2027
McLaren has confirmed the name of the supercar that will replace the 750S. It will be called the McL 820, it arrives in 2027 and it will have 603 kW (809 bhp), Auto Express reported on 30 October.

Key takeaways
- The new car is called McL 820 and goes on sale in 2027 as a series production model.
- Output is 603 kW (809 bhp); the 820 in the name is the metric horsepower figure, up from 552 kW (740 bhp) in the 750S.
- For the first time, McLaren is designing and developing its engine entirely in-house.
- It is the first model to use McLaren's new naming structure.
A new name, revealed in London
McLaren revealed the name on a kiwi-shaped sculpture in London, a nod to founder Bruce McLaren's New Zealand roots. The company says the McL 820 is "the first of a new generation of models to adopt this naming structure". The number in the name matches the car's output in metric horsepower.
The McL 820 takes over from the 750S, itself an evolution of the 720S, as the core model in McLaren's supercar range. The gain over its predecessor is about 51 kW (69 bhp), and the McL 820 will be built as a single series production model rather than in several versions at launch.
An in-house engine
The biggest technical change is behind the seats. Until now McLaren worked with the engineering firm Ricardo, which co-developed and built its engines. For the McL 820, McLaren is taking full responsibility for designing and developing its own engine. Auto Express does not give the engine type, its layout or whether it is a hybrid, and McLaren has not yet released prices, weight or performance figures.
Part of a bigger plan
The McL 820 also previews McLaren's next design language, first shown on the McL 6GT concept revealed in the US earlier in 2026. The 6GT will become a low-volume model "aimed at drivers after a more tactile driving experience", with the first manual gearbox of McLaren's modern era. The McL 820 is also described as paving the way for further new models, including McLaren's first SUV.
What it means for you
With a replacement confirmed for 2027, the 750S is approaching the end of its life, so anyone ordering one now should expect it to be the last of its line. Anyone considering a new McLaren in 2027 may prefer to wait for full specifications of the McL 820, especially details of the new engine. On the used market, the 720S and 750S remain the main ways into this type of McLaren.
