Mystery Toyota Test Car Hints at a New Small Electric SUV for Europe

A disguised Toyota prototype spotted testing in Germany suggests the brand is working on a new small electric SUV aimed at European buyers. Auto Express reported the sighting on 30 October and said it shows Toyota's electrification plans are "now moving ahead at speed".

Key takeaways

  • The test car wears the body of the Corolla Cross, an SUV not sold in the UK.
  • It has no exhaust system, which points to a fully electric drivetrain.
  • It is expected to be a small B-segment SUV, below the C-HR+ and alongside the Yaris Cross.
  • Toyota has not confirmed the model, its name or a launch date.

What was seen

The car is an early development mule, a test vehicle that hides new mechanical parts under the body of another model. In this case Toyota used the Corolla Cross, which reveals little about the chassis and powertrain underneath. Two details stand out. There is no exhaust, so a petrol or hybrid engine looks unlikely, and the wheels appear large for a car of this size.

Auto Express suggests the finished car will be a B-segment crossover. It would sit below the electric C-HR+ and next to the Yaris Cross, which stays a hybrid for now. That would give Toyota a direct rival for small electric SUVs such as the Volkswagen ID. Cross, Vauxhall Mokka and Renault 4.

A new platform

The prototype may use Toyota's new flexible global architecture. This platform is expected to appear first under the next Corolla, due within 12 to 24 months, and is designed to take petrol, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric powertrains. It is also expected to underpin the next Yaris and Yaris Cross. A shared base like this would let Toyota build a small electric SUV with the same parts as its best-selling hybrids, which should help keep costs down.

The new model would add to a fast-growing range of Toyota electric cars in Europe, which already includes the bZ4X and the C-HR+. Toyota also sells the small Aygo X and the C-HR, which remain important models in this part of the market.

What it means for you

This is an early prototype, so a showroom launch is unlikely to be close. If you need a small Toyota SUV now, the Yaris Cross hybrid remains the obvious choice and will not disappear. If you want a fully electric Toyota today, the bZ4X and C-HR+ are the options. Buyers who prefer a compact electric SUV with Toyota's reputation for reliability may find it worth waiting for more details, but no price or date has been given yet.
