Which Tera to buy

Our verdict · Felix Hartmann

  • Best all-rounder: the 1.0 TSI Comfort with the six-speed automatic, which adds two-pedal driving for about BRL 12,000 more than the manual.
  • Best value: the 1.0 TSI manual, which is quicker (10.0 seconds to 100 km/h) and cheaper than the automatics.
  • On a tight budget: the 1.0 MPI, though its 52-63 kW make it noticeably slower.
  • Want more space: look at the Nivus or T-Cross, which cost little more.

The Volkswagen Tera is a small crossover SUV that Volkswagen do Brasil has built since March 2025 at its Taubaté plant near São Paulo. At 4,100 mm long it sits below the T-Cross and Nivus as the brand's entry-level SUV in South America, and Volkswagen of South Africa builds it in Kariega as the Tengo. The Tera uses the MQB A0 platform of the current Polo and earned five stars from Latin NCAP in June 2025.

In short

  • First generation, unveiled in March 2025 and on sale in Brazil since mid-2025; 48,143 were sold there in 2025.
  • Engines: 1.0 MPI three-cylinder (52-63 kW, 71-85 PS by market), 1.0 TSI turbo (about 80-85 kW, 109-116 cv in Brazil) and, in some markets, a 1.6 MSI with 82 kW (110 PS).
  • 350 litres of boot space, five-speed manual or six-speed automatic, front-wheel drive only.
  • Latin NCAP 2025: five stars, with 90% for adult and 87% for child occupants.

The Tera is aimed at South American buyers who want an SUV for roughly the price of a compact hatchback, and in Volkswagen's Brazilian range it follows the long-running Gol. You can browse the European models in our Volkswagen catalogue.

Development and design

Volkswagen do Brasil developed the Tera as its cheapest SUV, filling the gap left by the Gol, which Wikipedia lists as its predecessor. Disguised prototypes were spotted testing in Rio de Janeiro in September 2024, and the car was unveiled in Brazil in early March 2025, with production starting the same month. Deliveries began in mid-2025.

The styling, by José Carlos Pavone, uses full-LED headlights joined by a slim grille, sculpted wings over the wheel arches and small LED tail lamps linked by a black trim panel. Underneath, the Tera shares its MQB A0 architecture with the sixth-generation Polo and the Nivus, which Europe knows as the Taigo, and with the Škoda Kylaq built in India.

Generations and versions

There is only one generation so far. In Brazil the line-up comprises the base 1.0 MPI, the 1.0 TSI with a manual gearbox and the 1.0 TSI automatic in Comfort and High trims. South Africa sells the car as the Volkswagen Tengo, and it is also offered in Argentina, where 4,776 were sold in 2025, and in Colombia.

Engines, transmissions and performance

Engine Power Torque Transmission Notes
1.0 MPI, 3-cyl., naturally aspirated 52-63 kW (71-85 PS) - 5-speed manual output depends on market and fuel
1.0 TSI, 3-cyl. turbo (Brazil, flex fuel) 80 kW (109 cv) petrol / 85 kW (116 cv) ethanol about 165 Nm (16.8 kgfm) at 1,750 rpm 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic 0-100 km/h 10.0 s, 195 km/h (manual)
1.0 TSI (other markets) 81 kW (111 PS), up to 87 kW (118 PS) in some listings - -
1.6 MSI, 4-cyl., naturally aspirated 82 kW (110 PS) - - selected export markets

Brazilian engines are flex-fuel units that make more power on ethanol than on petrol, so Brazilian spec sheets quote two outputs. The automatic is a six-speed unit with the internal code AQ160. All versions drive the front wheels; there is no four-wheel drive. Use our power converter to switch between kW, PS, cv and hp.

Fuel economy and running costs

Brazilian consumption figures for the 1.0 TSI manual are 12.5 km/l in town and 15.1 km/l on the highway on petrol, equal to about 8.0 and 6.6 l/100 km. On ethanol the figures are 8.5 and 10.6 km/l, or about 11.8 and 9.4 l/100 km. The automatic is slightly thirstier on petrol (12.3 and 14.6 km/l). These are local test-cycle values and are not comparable with WLTP; the fuel cost calculator estimates yearly fuel bills from any consumption figure.

Trims, equipment and prices

In June 2026 the FIPE reference table, which tracks average transaction prices in Brazil, valued the 2026 Tera 1.0 TSI manual at BRL 108,274 (about EUR 17,000), the Comfort 1.0 TSI automatic at BRL 120,030 (about EUR 19,000) and the High 1.0 TSI automatic at BRL 133,169 (about EUR 21,000). For comparison the T-Cross Sense 1.0 TSI stood at BRL 111,976 (about EUR 17,500) in the same table. Even the most basic Latin American version tested by Latin NCAP had six airbags.

Safety

Latin NCAP crash-tested the Tera in June 2025 in its most basic Latin American specification with six airbags and awarded five stars. The scores were 90% for adult occupant protection (35.95 points), 87% for child occupants (42.75 points), 76% for pedestrians and vulnerable road users (36.37 points) and 85% for safety assist (36.45 points). Latin NCAP's current protocol is broadly comparable to the Euro NCAP tests of 2017. The Tera has not been tested by Euro NCAP.

Reliability and known issues

The Tera has only been on sale since mid-2025, and we found no documented recalls or recurring faults in our sources. Its engines and gearboxes are shared with high-volume Volkswagen models such as the Polo, Nivus and T-Cross.

In Brazil the Tera's direct rivals include the Fiat Pulse and the Renault Kardian. Inside Volkswagen it overlaps with the Nivus and the T-Cross, which offer more space for a little more money.
