Our verdict · Felix Hartmann
- In Europe: the Executive AWD is the sensible choice; the Emerald Edition adds little but costs EUR 3,570 more.
- For range: the European car's 521 km WLTP is the best figure on offer; Chinese long-range FWD versions are not sold here.
- For efficiency on long trips: in China, the Han DM-i with up to 200 km NEDC of electric range; it was never offered in Germany.
- Used: look for cars first registered through official European BYD dealers, and check the remaining battery warranty.
The BYD Han is BYD's large electric and plug-in hybrid saloon, the flagship of its Dynasty range in China since July 2020. In Europe it was sold only as a 380 kW (517 PS) all-wheel-drive electric car, listed in Germany from EUR 69,020 between April 2023 and June 2025 (ADAC). Chinese sales passed one million units by the end of 2025.
In short
- E-segment four-door saloon, 4,995 mm long with a 2,920 mm wheelbase; built since 2020.
- Electric (Han EV) and plug-in hybrid (Han DM, later DM-i and DM-p) versions.
- European Han: two motors, 380 kW (517 PS), 700 Nm, 85.4 kWh, 521 km WLTP and 0-100 km/h in 3.9 s.
- Successor in China: the larger Han L of 2025; a flagship above it, the Dahan, was teased in 2026.

In 2021 the Han EV won an iF Design Award, the first saloon from a Chinese brand to do so. The rest of the range is on our BYD brand page.
Generations and versions
| Generation | Code | Years | Body styles | Engines | Power (kW / hp) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Han EV / Han DM | - | 2020-2022 | 4-door saloon | electric; 2.0 turbo PHEV | 163-363 kW (219-487 hp) |
| Han facelift (EV, DM-i, DM-p) | - | 2022- | 4-door saloon | electric; 1.5 turbo PHEV | 145-380 kW (194-510 hp) |
So far there is one generation, updated twice. The April 2022 facelift gave the EV a new front and launched the DM-i and DM-p hybrids, which replaced the original Han DM; BYD reported 48,136 orders within six hours of the launch. The September 2024 update for the 2025 model year cut prices, gave all versions the EV front end, moved the DM-i to BYD's fifth-generation hybrid system and added the DiPilot 300 driver-assistance package with lidar and DiSus-C adaptive damping. A ride-hailing version, the BYD e9, has been built since March 2021.

| EV (2022-), AWD | 85.44 kWh | 380 kW (517 PS) | 700 Nm | 3.9 s | 610 km CLTC |
| Han Executive AWD (Europe) | 85.4 kWh | 380 kW (517 PS) | 700 Nm | 3.9 s | 521 km WLTP |
The European car uses a 180 kW front motor and a 200 kW rear motor. ADAC lists a top speed of 180 km/h, DC charging at up to 120 kW (about 30 minutes to 80%) and a 592 kg LFP battery. Chinese CLTC and old NEDC ranges are much higher than WLTP and should not be compared directly.
Han DM, DM-i and DM-p (plug-in hybrids)
The original Han DM (2020-2021) combined a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine of 141 kW with an electric motor for a system output of 321 kW (437 PS) and 650 Nm, drove all four wheels and reached 100 km/h in 4.7 s; its 15.2 kWh battery gave 81 km NEDC on electricity. The Han DM-i of 2022 uses a 1.5-litre turbo engine with 102 kW and a front motor of 145 or 160 kW, with 18.32 or 30.77 kWh batteries for 121 or 200 km NEDC; BYD quotes up to 1,300 km of total range. The Han DM-p adds a 200 kW rear motor, a 36.01 kWh battery and 0-100 km/h in 3.7 s. None of the hybrids was offered in Germany. Convert any of these outputs with our power converter.

Dimensions, space and boot
| Parameter | Metric | Imperial |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 4,995 mm | 196.7 in |
| Width (without / with mirrors) | 1,910 / 2,134 mm | 75.2 / 84.0 in |

| Kerb weight (EU, AWD) | 2,325 kg | 5,126 lb |
| Boot | 410 l | 14.5 cu ft |
At almost five metres the Han is a full-size saloon, but the 410-litre boot is small for a car of this length. Our size comparison tool shows it next to other executive cars.
Energy consumption and running costs
ADAC lists 18.5 kWh/100 km in the WLTP combined cycle for the European Han (14.2 in town, 23.5 on the motorway) and estimates about 505 km of real range at 10 °C and 90 km/h. The Han DM of 2020 was rated at 1.4 l/100 km NEDC with a charged battery and 5.9 l/100 km on the engine alone.
Trims and prices
In Germany ADAC lists two versions, both with the 380 kW drivetrain: the Executive AWD from EUR 69,020 and the Emerald Edition AWD from EUR 72,590 (base prices, versions built 04/2023-06/2025). After mid-2025 the Han no longer appears as a current model in the ADAC catalogue. In China the Han is much cheaper; the April 2022 facelift started at the equivalent of about USD 33,900 according to press reports, and the 2025 model year brought further cuts.
Safety
We found no Euro NCAP rating for the Han; Euro NCAP tested other BYD models of the period, such as the Atto 3 (2022) and the Tang (2023). The 2024 update added DiPilot 300 assistance with lidar and an Nvidia Orin-X processor in China.
Reliability and known issues
No Han-specific recalls or defects were reported in the sources we used. The car uses BYD's LFP Blade battery; for BYD's current German models ADAC lists a high-voltage battery warranty of 8 years or 200,000 km, but check the terms for a specific Han with the dealer.
Sales
In China the Han sold 40,556 units in 2020, 117,665 in 2021, 272,462 in 2022, 227,746 in 2023, 228,713 in 2024 and 119,821 in 2025, roughly half of them plug-in hybrids. That adds up to just over one million cars in six years.
