Chery Volt-Dragon: Megawatt Charging for Passenger Cars, 10 to 97 % in Under 7 Minutes

Chery has joined the megawatt charging race in China. At its Global Innovation Conference in October 2026, the carmaker presented Volt-Dragon, a charging system for passenger electric cars with a peak output of 1.44 MW. Chery says it can charge a battery from 10 to 97 % in 6 minutes and 50 seconds.

Key takeaways

  • Volt-Dragon delivers up to 1.44 MW, or 1,440 kW, to a passenger car.
  • Chery quotes 10 to 97 % in 6 minutes 50 seconds.
  • Robot-arm charging and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) feedback are planned.
  • Chery targets more than 20,000 V2G-capable Volt-Dragon stations worldwide by 2029.

What Chery announced

The system was reported by Car News China on 22 October 2026 and by electrive a day later. Chery has not said which of its models will be able to use the full power. Car News China expects compatible cars to use 800-volt or 1,000-volt platforms, because such high outputs need very high voltages to keep currents manageable.

Details of the first roll-out are unclear. Chery spoke of stations in ten cities but named none, and it is expected to give fuller expansion plans before the end of 2026.

Parameter Value
System Chery Volt-Dragon
Peak output 1.44 MW (1,440 kW)
Charging time 10 to 97 % in 6 min 50 s (Chery)
Planned features Robot-arm charging, V2G
Target More than 20,000 V2G stations worldwide by 2029
Compatible models Not yet announced

How it compares

Chery is not alone. BYD's Flash Charging system goes from 10 to 98 % in 6 minutes 27 seconds; BYD reached 10,000 stations at the end of August 2026 and plans 20,000 by the end of the year. Huawei and Geely are also rolling out megawatt chargers, with charging windows of about 8 to 9 minutes for the same range.

For comparison, the fastest public chargers on European motorways usually deliver 300 to 400 kW, and very few cars sold in Europe can accept more than that. Megawatt charging for cars is still largely a Chinese development.

What it means for Europe

Chery sells cars in Europe under the Chery, Omoda and Jaecoo brands, but there is no announcement yet that Volt-Dragon chargers or compatible models will come to Europe. The global target of 20,000 stations by 2029 suggests the company wants to take the system beyond China, but there are no European dates.

For now, charging time in Europe depends far more on the car than on the charger. Our electric car catalogue lists peak charging power for each model, and the fuel cost calculator works out what a charge costs.
