Which Omoda 5 to choose and its rivals
Our verdict · Felix Hartmann
The 1.6 TGDI with 145 kW is the most powerful petrol version in Europe. Drivers who want lower fuel use can choose the hybrid where it is offered. The E5 is the choice for buyers who can charge at home; its €36,900 German price in April 2026 should be compared with its range in the current WLTP data.
In size and price the Omoda 5 competes with compact SUVs such as the Nissan Qashqai, the Kia Sportage and the Haval Jolion, another Chinese crossover sold in Europe.
The Omoda 5, also sold as the Omoda C5, is a compact crossover from the Chery group, unveiled at Auto Guangzhou in November 2021 and built in Wuhu, China, since February 2022. In Europe it is offered with a 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine, as the electric E5 (also called 5 EV) and, since 2025 in some markets, as a hybrid. The car carries different names around the world, from Chery Omoda 5 to Chery C5, and it was the first model of the Omoda brand.
Omoda is a brand of Chery Automobile, set up in 2022 and positioned above the mainstream Chery cars. It is sold only outside China, together with its sister brand Jaecoo, and both made their global debut in Wuhu in April 2023. Omoda's European rollout began in Spain in March 2024, followed by the UK in May and Italy in mid-2024. In April 2024 Chery agreed a joint venture with EV Motors to build Omoda cars in a former Nissan factory in Barcelona. By August 2025 Omoda and Jaecoo together had sold 600,000 cars worldwide.

Launch and the Omoda brand
Chery showed the car under the code name X-C at Auto Guangzhou in November 2021. Production started in February 2022, and Chinese sales followed in the second quarter of that year. In 2023 the car went on sale in Turkey, Australia, South Africa, Indonesia, Malaysia and Mexico, mostly under the new Omoda brand.
For Europe the timing was 2024: Italy received the 1.6 TGDI in Comfort and Premium trims in June 2024, with the electric version from late 2024, and Hungary followed on 10 October 2024. The UK launch included both the 1.6 petrol and the EV. The parent company's growth is described in the history of Chery, and the Chery SUVs it grew out of in the overview of the Tiggo 2, Tiggo 4 and Tiggo 7.

Engines, gearboxes and the hybrid
| Version | Engine | Power | Torque | Gearbox |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.5 (some markets) | 1,498 cc four-cylinder | 82 kW (111 PS) | 138 Nm | — |
| 1.5T 230T | 1.5-litre turbo (SQRE4T15C) | 108–115 kW (147–156 PS) | 230 Nm | CVT |
| 1.6 TGDI 290T | 1.6-litre turbo (SQRF4J16) | 147 kW (200 PS) | 290 Nm | seven-speed dual-clutch |

| SHS-H hybrid | 1.5-litre turbo + motor | — | — | dedicated hybrid transmission |
In some markets the 1.6 is available with all-wheel drive, which lowers the ground clearance from 190 to 180 mm. In the UK the August 2025 refresh cut the 1.6's output from 136.5 kW (186 PS) to 108 kW (147 PS). The facelifted C5 for Australia, Indonesia and Malaysia replaced the CVT with a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox.
The hybrid uses a series-parallel layout with a dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT) and a 1.5-litre turbo engine. Wikipedia EN does not give its output, so it is left out here. The main types of hybrid drive are explained in the overview of hybrid cars and their varieties.

The electric Omoda E5
The electric version was shown at Auto Shanghai in April 2023. It has a 150 kW (204 PS) motor and originally a 61 kWh battery; Australian cars of the 2025.5 model year switched to a 58.9 kWh pack. The EV weighs 1,710 kg, roughly 100 kg more than the heaviest petrol version. In the German list the ADAC catalogue gives the 5 EV Exclusive with 155 kW (211 PS) at €36,900 from April 2026.
Wikipedia EN does not give a WLTP range for the E5, so buyers should check the figure for their market in the current price list.
Interior, space and facelifts
The boot holds 378 litres, or 1,075 litres with the rear seats folded. For the UK refresh of August 2025 Omoda removed the full-size spare wheel, which raised the boot by 15 % to 430 litres. The same update brought a new interior, a gear selector on the steering column and revised suspension.
The first facelift for export markets was revealed in March 2025, with a new front bumper, body-coloured grille trim, new wheels and no red accents. In Australia and Indonesia the car was then renamed C5 (petrol) and E5 (electric), and in Malaysia O5. A second export facelift was shown in October 2025.

Safety and recalls
Wikipedia EN reports that the Omoda 5 was tested by Euro NCAP in 2022 and received five stars. In Green NCAP, Euro NCAP's separate assessment of efficiency and emissions, the Chery Omoda 5 received two stars in 2024. Several recalls followed in export markets: 5,901 cars in Australia in February 2024 for a brake-pipe bolt, cars in Malaysia and Indonesia in 2024 for the rear axle beam, and Omoda 5 and E5 cars in the UK in February 2026 for a driveshaft nut. Owners of a used car should have the recall status checked by a dealer.
