Verdict Opinion
The Granta is the more modern and better-equipped car, with an automatic option, electric power steering, a bigger boot and, in European specification, a full set of electronic safety aids. The VAZ-2110 is the older design with the more powerful 16-valve engines and a higher top speed, and it is now a car for those who like the 1990s Lada era.
For everyday use and safety the Granta wins clearly; the 2110 appeals mainly on character.

The VAZ-2110, sold in Europe as the Lada 110, and the Lada Granta are front-wheel-drive saloons from AvtoVAZ that were built roughly a decade apart. The 2110 entered pilot production in 1995 after a development that began in 1983, and the saloon was built until October 2007, when the Priora took over. The Granta, developed under an internal "Low Cost" project on the Lada Kalina platform, entered production in November 2011.
They were never sold new side by side, but they are almost exactly the same size and were both offered in Germany, which makes them a natural comparison for anyone choosing a used Lada saloon.
Engineering, design and everyday use
Engineering
Both cars use transverse petrol fours driving the front wheels. The 2110 range ran from a 1.5 8-valve with 52 kW (71 PS) to 1.5 and 1.6 16-valve engines with 67 kW (90 PS); every version used a five-speed manual. The Granta uses 1.6-litre engines: an 8-valve with 64 kW (87 PS) and 16-valve units with 72 kW (98 PS) or about 78 kW (106 PS). It added a four-speed automatic in 2012 and later an automated manual.
The Granta has MacPherson struts at the front, a torsion-beam rear axle and electric power steering. Both cars have front disc brakes and rear drums.
Size and practicality
The 2110 saloon is 4,265 mm (167.9 in) long and 1,680 mm (66.1 in) wide on a 2,492 mm (98.1 in) wheelbase, with a 416 L (14.7 cu ft) boot. The Granta saloon is 4,260 mm (167.7 in) long, 1,700 mm (66.9 in) wide and taller at 1,500 mm (59.1 in), on a 2,476 mm (97.5 in) wheelbase, with about 480 L (17.0 cu ft) of boot space in EU catalogue data. Both families also offered estates and hatchbacks, and the Granta added a liftback.
Performance and safety
The 16-valve 2110 reaches 185 km/h (115 mph) and 100 km/h in 12.5 seconds, using about 7.4 L/100 km on the NEDC cycle. The 8-valve Granta manages 168 km/h (104 mph) and 11.8 seconds, with 6.6 L/100 km. In Germany, the 2004 Lada 110 listed only a rear centre belt and rear head restraints as standard safety items, while German-market Grantas had front airbags, ABS, brake assist, ESP and ISOFIX as standard. No Euro NCAP rating was found for either car.
