Ruf is a German car maker from Pfaffenhausen in Bavaria. Alois Ruf Sr. founded Auto Ruf there in 1939 as a service garage, adding a petrol station in 1949. After his death his son Alois Ruf Jr. took over in 1974, at the age of 24, and turned the business towards Porsche cars, especially the 911.

The first complete Ruf models appeared in 1977–1978, and the BTR was built from 1983 to 1989. Ruf became famous in 1987, when the Ruf CTR "Yellowbird" reached 339 km/h, beating the claimed top speed of the Ferrari F40; its successor, the CTR2, reached 350 km/h in 1995. The German government treats Ruf as a full manufacturer, so its cars carry their own identification numbers. Early cars were built on Porsche bodies in white, but the mid-engined CTR3 of 2007 had Ruf's first wholly original body and chassis, followed by the CTR Anniversary of 2017 and the SCR of 2018.
