About Proton
Proton was founded in 1983 as Malaysia's national car company, with Mitsubishi as technical partner. Its first car, the Proton Saga of 1985, was based on the Mitsubishi Lancer.
Proton owned Lotus from 1996 to 2017 and developed models of its own such as the Waja, Gen-2, Persona and Exora. Since 2017 Geely has held a 49.9 per cent stake, and newer Proton SUVs such as the X50 and X70 are based on Geely models.
