Isuzu Motors is a Japanese maker of trucks, pickups and diesel engines headquartered in Yokohama. Its origins go back to 1916, when Tokyo Ishikawajima Shipbuilding planned to cooperate in car building, and to a technical agreement with the British firm Wolseley in 1918. The company took the name Isuzu, after the Isuzu River, in 1949.
Isuzu built passenger cars for several decades, including the Bellel of 1961, the 117 Coupé, the Gemini, the Piazza and the Trooper off-roader. A capital agreement of 1971 made General Motors a major shareholder for about 35 years, until GM sold its shares in 2006. Production of the Aska and Trooper ended in 2002, and Isuzu left the United States car market on 31 January 2009. Today its main products are trucks such as the Elf of 1959 and the Giga, diesel engines and the Isuzu D-Max pickup, which also formed the basis of the Mazda BT-50. See also Toyota and Mazda.
