Changan Automobile is a Chinese state-owned car maker headquartered in Jiangbei, Chongqing. The group traces its origins to 1862, when Li Hongzhang founded the Shanghai Foreign Gun Bureau as a military supply factory. It built its first vehicle, the Changjiang Type 46 jeep, in 1959, and the first Changan-branded minivans and trucks followed in 1984. In 2025 China Changan Automobile Group was spun off from China South Industries and became a central state-owned enterprise in its own right.
Changan builds cars under its own name, including the Changan CS35 SUV, and has the electric brands Deepal and Avatr. It runs joint ventures with Ford (Changan Ford, from 2001) and Mazda (Changan Mazda); the Changan Suzuki venture of 1993 became fully Changan-owned in 2018, when Suzuki transferred its stake. Its Oshan passenger car brand was discontinued in 2024. For the full story, read Changan's history. See also Ford, Mazda and Hafei.
