Autobianchi was an Italian car brand formed in 1955 by Bianchi, Fiat and Pirelli, with the agreement signed on 11 January 1955. The company built a new plant in Desio.
Its first model, the Bianchina of 1957, was an upscale city car based on the Fiat 500 and was made until 1969. In 1964 came the Primula, a front-wheel-drive car with a transverse engine, which served Fiat as a test of the layout for later cars. Bianchi sold its share in 1968, and Fiat then took full control of the company. In 1969 the brand launched the A111 saloon and the Autobianchi A112, a small hatchback that gained sporty Abarth versions and stayed in production until May 1986, and in the same year Autobianchi came under the control of Lancia. The A112 was eventually replaced by the Y10, and the brand ended in the mid-1990s. See also Fiat, Lancia and Autobianchi A112 Runabout.
