New Citroen 2CV: Latest on the Low-Cost Electric Car Due by 2028
Citroen has given more detail on the new 2CV, the small electric car previewed by a concept at the 2026 Paris Motor Show. The brand says it will reach showrooms by the end of 2028 with a starting price of about 15,000 euros (£12,700) in 2028, Auto Express reported on 26 October.

Key takeaways
- On sale by the end of 2028 from about 15,000 euros (£12,700) in 2028.
- To be built to the EU's planned E-car rules for simpler, cheaper cars.
- Target weight of about one tonne; no battery or range figures yet.
- Concept is 3.76 metres long, between the Ami and the e-C3.
Designed to be cheap
Citroen describes the new 2CV as a car designed to be inexpensive, rather than a stripped-out version of a normal car. Design lead Antoine Gaillot-Drevon said the team did not want a retro or revival design, and called the concept super-credible and clearly possible to put into production. Nods to the original include ridges on the bonnet and flattened headlights. Near-flat front and rear screens, exposed wipers, ventilation slots and a roll-back fabric roof cut complexity and cost. The rear panel is unpainted black, moulded straight into the tailgate, and the exposed bumpers should carry over to production.
The concept rides on 18-inch wheels with plastic covers. The production car will use steel wheels of the same size with narrow tyres developed with Michelin. It will have roll-down front windows and pop-out rear windows.
Inside and under the skin
A black bar under the windscreen replaces a normal instrument cluster and shows speed and warnings. The single-spoke steering wheel sits in a barrel-shaped housing that forms the dashboard, with an e-ink screen and gear selector. Cabin space is not final, the boot will be compact and Citroen is working on folding rear seats.
No technical details have been released. The one-tonne target suggests a small battery and limited range, although low weight should make good use of it. The car is being developed for the E-car class still being negotiated between the EU and carmakers. The production site has not been announced.
What it means for you
If you want a cheap, simple electric car for town, the 2CV is one to wait for, but not before 2028. Until then, the Ami quadricycle and the e-C3 are the affordable Citroen EVs on sale. UK managing director Greg Taylor said the reaction since Paris has been fantastic, so expect strong demand. Final prices, range and UK specifications will be confirmed closer to launch.
