Nio Firefly Battery Upgrade: 60 kWh Pack, Swap Option for Owners
Nio has given its small Firefly electric car a bigger battery in China, and existing owners can get it too by swapping their pack at a battery swap station, electrive reported on 30 October. It is the second upgrade for the Firefly within a year.

Key takeaways
- New optional 60 kWh CATL battery, the same size and weight as the old 42 kWh pack.
- Range rises from 420 km to 560 km on the Chinese CLTC cycle, roughly 340 km (211 miles) to 454 km (282 miles) WLTP.
- A new Firefly with the larger battery starts at about 17,100 euros (136,800 yuan) in China in 2026.
- Existing owners can upgrade permanently through a battery swap.
More energy in the same space
Nio fits more energy into the same space by moving from LFP cells to ternary lithium cells, which have a higher energy density. The first of the two updates replaced the 105 kW (141 bhp) motor with a 120 kW (161 bhp) unit. The Firefly is sold in China as a separate brand and is also available in some European markets.
How the upgrade works for current owners
Owners who bought the battery with the car can upgrade permanently no sooner than one year after purchase. The swap is done at a battery swap station, and Nio's fifth-generation stations are compatible with the Firefly.
- Battery bought with the car: the standard upgrade fee is 17,000 yuan, about 2,125 euros in 2026. Buyers who ordered by 22 October 2026 and complete the swap by the end of 2027 receive a points credit of 2,000 yuan, about 250 euros at 2026 rates.
- Battery on a monthly lease: a one-time service fee of 3,000 yuan, about 375 euros in 2026, and the monthly fee rises from 399 to 599 yuan, roughly 50 to 75 euros in 2026. A limited-time voucher of 1,000 yuan lowers the one-time fee to 2,000 yuan for eligible first-time buyers.
What it means for you
For now this upgrade applies only to China, and electrive does not say whether European Firefly cars will get the 60 kWh battery. Still, it shows the main advantage of Nio's swap system: a car bought today is not stuck with the battery it left the factory with. If you are considering a Firefly in Europe, ask whether swap stations near you can serve the car and whether a larger battery is planned, as range is the main limit of a small city EV on longer trips.
