Hongqi is a luxury car brand of FAW Group, the state-owned vehicle maker headquartered in Changchun, Jilin province. Launched in 1958, it is China's oldest passenger car brand. The name means "red banner", usually translated as "Red Flag".
The first Hongqi, the CA72 with a V8 engine, was introduced on 1 August 1958. The CA770, first shown in 1963, was built as a limousine for high-ranking officials and stayed in production until 1980. Production stopped in 1981, and the brand returned in the mid-1990s. The modern range, aimed at buyers of premium cars, includes large saloons such as the Hongqi H9, the HS5 mid-size SUV, the HS9 full-size SUV and the electric E-HS9. Hongqi began selling cars in Europe in Norway in September 2021 with the E-HS9, followed by Denmark in December 2022 and Sweden in January 2023, each time starting with the same model.
