De Tomaso is an Italian sports car maker founded in Modena in 1959 by the Argentine-born Alejandro de Tomaso.
The first road-going model was the Vallelunga of 1963, and the Mangusta of 1966 was the first built in significant numbers, with a Ford V8. Ford bought an 84% stake in 1971, and the De Tomaso Pantera, built from 1971 to 1993, was sold in the United States through Lincoln-Mercury dealers; Ford sold its stake back to De Tomaso in 1974. Other De Tomaso models of the period included the Deauville saloon of 1971, the Longchamp coupé of 1972 and the carbon-bodied Guarà of 1993. From 1976 to 1993 De Tomaso owned Maserati and Innocenti, which Fiat then bought. It went into liquidation in 2004. Hong Kong-based Ideal Team Ventures acquired the brand in 2014 and presented the P72 at the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed. See also Maserati, Innocenti and Maserati Kyalami.
