DAF is a Dutch company founded in 1928 by the brothers Hub and Wim van Doorne, with its headquarters in Eindhoven. Today it builds trucks, but DAF also made small passenger cars. The first, the DAF 600, was shown in February 1958 and went on sale in 1959 as the world's first car with a continuously variable transmission.

That transmission, the Variomatic, became the brand's trademark and was fitted to the 600, 33, 44, 55 and 66. The Daffodil models followed the 600, the 44 arrived in 1966 and the 55 in 1968, and in 1967 DAF opened a car plant in Born. Volvo bought a third of the car business in 1972 and a 75% stake on 1 January 1975, when DAF sold its passenger car division to Volvo Cars. The 66 became the Volvo 66, and the last DAF design arrived in 1976 as the Volvo 300 series. Read more about the DAF 600.
