Borgward was a German car group from Bremen built up by Carl F. W. Borgward (1890–1963). In 1929 he merged his Goliath-Werke with Hansa-Lloyd and became its director. After the Second World War it was organised as three separate companies, Borgward, Goliath and Lloyd, set up in 1946.
Borgward's most popular model was the Borgward Isabella, produced in Bremen-Sebaldsbrück from 1954 to 1962. Its 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine produced 45 kW (61 PS), or 56 kW (76 PS) in the sporty TS version, and 202,862 were built. In 1961 creditors forced the group into liquidation: Borgward and Goliath were declared bankrupt in September and Lloyd in November. Carl Borgward died in July 1963. Much later a new Borgward Group AG, formed in 2008, revived the name with backing from Beiqi Foton in China, where SUV sales began by January 2017. The revived company filed for bankruptcy in Beijing on 8 April 2022. See also Auto Union and NSU.
