BMW Takes Its Level 2 Driving Assistant Into City Traffic in 2027
BMW will extend its Level 2 assisted driving to city streets, letting the car make turns, negotiate roundabouts and handle right-of-way at junctions while the driver supervises. The rollout starts in Germany in 2027, once type approval is granted, and arrives on existing cars via an over-the-air update, electrive reported on 2 November.

Key takeaways
- New urban functions: turning, roundabouts and priority situations at junctions.
- Germany first in 2027, other European countries to follow gradually.
- Hardware already fitted to the new iX3, iX4, X5, 3 Series and 7 Series.
- Approval under UN Regulation No. 171 is expected in early 2027.
What the system will do
The upgrade links the assistant to active route guidance in BMW Maps, so the car knows in advance where it has to turn, merge or leave a roundabout. With that information it can position itself on multi-lane roads, make turns, drive through roundabouts and deal with priority at intersections detected by its sensors. The current City Assistant already stops at traffic lights and pulls away again. Combined with the motorway functions, BMW says a trip from motorway to country road to city centre can be covered by the system.
BMW calls the way driver and system share control Symbiotic Drive. If the driver steers, brakes or accelerates, the assistant stays active and adapts instead of switching off, and the driver can take over completely at any moment. Status messages appear in the Panoramic iDrive strip below the windscreen, and a new 3D view shows the route, the surroundings detected by the sensors and the active assistance systems.
Still Level 2, with a camera watching
The system remains SAE Level 2, so the driver is responsible at all times. The functions work only while an in-cabin camera detects an attentive person at the wheel, and Motor1 noted that the city functions are not described as hands-off. The legal basis is UN Regulation No. 171 (DCAS) in its Series 02 version, which from 2027 allows assistance systems to propose and start manoeuvres themselves in urban traffic for the first time. An independent technical service has completed the required real-world road tests.
Prices and availability
BMW has not announced a price for the urban functions. Buyers do not have to choose them when ordering, because the features can be unlocked later over the air. For reference, electrive put BMW's existing comprehensive Level 2 packages at roughly 1,000 to 5,000 euros in 2026, depending on model and booking type, with a limited subscription of 1,500 euros for four years in 2026. Development board member Joachim Post described the goal as "a real improvement in driving comfort".
What it means for drivers
If you are ordering a new 3 Series, X5, 7 Series, iX3 or iX4, the hardware for city assistance is already on board, so there is no reason to wait for it. BMW already charges for its current Level 2 packages, so a paid unlock is likely, and availability will depend on each country's approval timetable. Even when active, the system needs your eyes on the road.
