New Toyota 1.5-Litre Hybrid Engine: Up to 15% More Efficient
Toyota is preparing a new 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine designed from the start for hybrid cars, and the company says it could be up to 15 per cent more efficient than its current engines, Auto Express reported on 28 October. Applied to today's best Toyota hybrids, that would mean more than 85 mpg (about 3.3 l/100 km).

Key takeaways
- New 1.5-litre four-cylinder replaces both the 1.8-litre four and the 1.3-litre three-cylinder.
- Naturally aspirated and turbocharged versions are planned.
- Up to 15 per cent better efficiency than Toyota's current engines.
- Expected to be central to the next-generation Corolla, due in 2028.
A new engine family
The engine is part of Toyota's new modular powertrain programme. It was developed for hybrid use from the outset, with lower internal friction, better thermal management and smaller electrical losses. Toyota plans a single engine family with several power outputs, so development costs can be spread across many models and possibly across other brands. Auto Express gives no power, torque or emissions figures yet.
The engine is also physically shorter than the units it replaces. That could allow designers to lower the bonnet line of future models and improve aerodynamics, which would bring further efficiency gains on the road.
Hybrid, plug-in and range-extender
The engine will work with a redesigned hybrid module that comes in several sizes and layouts. These range from the self-charging hybrid system used in many current Toyotas to plug-in hybrids and possibly range-extender electric cars. The electrical parts, including the motors, control units and inverters, are new, lighter and more compact.
Where the 85 mpg figure comes from
Toyota's current hybrids return up to 74 mpg (about 3.8 l/100 km). A 15 per cent improvement on that figure gives roughly 85 mpg, before any other changes such as better aerodynamics. This is a calculation based on Toyota's efficiency target, not an official consumption figure for a specific car.
The first car to use the engine has not been confirmed. Auto Express expects it to play a central role in the next Toyota Corolla, due in 2028 with hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric versions. The Corolla Concept shown at the 2025 Tokyo Motor Show hints at how the shorter engine could change the shape of future Toyotas.
What it means for you
For buyers in Europe, current Toyota hybrids with the 1.8-litre and 1.3-litre engines remain on sale and are not yet affected. If low running costs are the priority and you can wait, the next generation of Toyota hybrids, starting with the Corolla in 2028, should use less fuel. For anyone buying now, today's Toyota hybrids are already among the most economical petrol cars, and the technology is well proven.
