E.ON Buys Smatrics EnBW Italia: Four Charging Parks in Northern Italy
E.ON Drive Infrastructure (EDRI) Italy is acquiring 100 per cent of Smatrics EnBW Italia, taking over four high-power charging parks with a total of 64 ultra-fast charging points in northern Italy, electrive reported on 30 October. The seller, the joint venture Smatrics EnBW, is leaving Italy to concentrate on its home market, Austria.

Key takeaways
- EDRI Italy takes over all shares of Smatrics EnBW Italia; the price has not been disclosed.
- Four charging parks with 64 ultra-fast charging points along key transit routes.
- Smatrics EnBW exits Italy about two years after opening its first site there.
- EDRI already won a tender for 104 high-power stations at Italian motorway service areas in early 2026.
The four sites
All four parks sit on busy corridors used by drivers heading between central Europe and Italy:
- Brixen-Vahrn (South Tyrol): 20 ultra-fast chargers on the Brenner corridor.
- Palmanova (Udine): 12 ultra-fast chargers on the Alpine-Adriatic corridor.
- Gruaro (Venice): 16 ultra-fast chargers between the A28 and A4 motorways.
- Trezzo sull'Adda (Milan): 16 ultra-fast chargers along the A4, serving the Milan area.
According to EDRI, the sites have high grid connection capacity, which allows quick expansion and future technology upgrades. Smatrics EnBW opened its first Italian park on the Brenner route at the end of 2024, added Palmanova in 2025 and two more sites in February 2026. A spokesperson said the company now wants to put all its resources into Austria.
E.ON's growing Italian network
Michele De Gaspari, EDRI's Regional Director for Southern Europe, said the deal strengthens the company's presence along major European traffic corridors, and management called it an important milestone for E.ON Drive Infrastructure Italy. EDRI operates in eleven European countries, employs about 200 people and runs roughly 10,000 public charging stations. Earlier in 2026 it won a tender from Autostrade per l'Italia, the country's largest motorway operator, to build 104 high-power stations at 18 service areas on routes including the A4 and A14. All of them are due to be running by the end of 2026.
What it means for you
If you drive an electric car to Italy over the Brenner Pass or towards Venice and Milan, these four sites should keep operating under new ownership. Before a trip, check which apps and charging cards are accepted after the handover, because roaming partners and prices can change when a network switches operator. Combined with the new motorway stations, northern Italy is becoming easier for long-distance EV journeys from Austria and Germany.
