How the fuel cost is calculated
The calculator converts your consumption to litres per 100 km first (mpg and km/l figures are converted with exact factors: 235.21 ÷ mpg US, 282.48 ÷ mpg UK, 100 ÷ km/l). Litres used = distance in km × l/100 km ÷ 100, doubled for a return trip. The trip cost is litres used × the price of one litre; a price per gallon is converted first (1 US gallon = 3.785 l, 1 UK gallon = 4.546 l). For an electric car the same sum runs in kWh: kWh used = distance × kWh/100 km ÷ 100, times the price of a kWh.
Real-world consumption depends on speed, load, temperature, tyre pressure and traffic, so official WLTP or NEDC figures are usually lower than what you will see on the road. For a realistic estimate, use the consumption shown by your trip computer over several fill-ups.
Currency, cost per person and CO₂
Type the fuel price in your own currency — euro, US dollar, pound, Swiss franc, złoty, hryvnia and more. The price you enter is used as it is; nothing is converted. Sharing the car? The cost per person is the trip cost divided by the number of people. Tailpipe CO₂ is estimated from the fuel burnt: about 2.31 kg per litre of petrol, 2.68 kg per litre of diesel and 1.51 kg per litre of LPG; an electric car emits none at the tailpipe.
Cost per kilometre
Cost per 100 km = l/100 km × fuel price. Divide it by 100 to get the cost per kilometre — handy for comparing a car with public transport or for splitting the cost of a shared trip.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the fuel cost of a trip?
Multiply the distance in km by the consumption in l/100 km, divide by 100 to get litres, then multiply by the price of a litre of fuel.
How do I convert mpg to l/100 km?
Divide 282.48 by the UK mpg figure, or 235.21 by the US mpg figure. For example, 40 mpg UK is about 7.1 l/100 km.
Can I use dollars, pounds or another currency?
Yes. Choose the currency next to the price and enter what you pay per litre, per gallon or per kWh — the result is shown in the same currency.
Why is my real fuel cost higher than the official figure?
Official figures come from a standard laboratory cycle. Higher speeds, short trips, cold weather, roof boxes and under-inflated tyres all increase real consumption.
