What the total cost of ownership includes
Depreciation is usually the biggest single cost. The calculator applies the percentage to the remaining value every year, so a car that loses 15% a year is worth 0.85⁵ ≈ 44% of its price after five years. Fuel = distance per year × years × l/100 km ÷ 100 × price per litre. Insurance, road tax and maintenance are added as yearly amounts multiplied by the number of years.
The total is then divided by the number of years, months and kilometres driven. Financing costs, parking, tolls and cleaning are not included — add them to maintenance if you want them in the result.
Typical depreciation
Many new cars lose 15–25% in the first year and 10–15% a year after that; popular models with a strong reputation for reliability hold their value better. Use the figure that matches the car's age when you buy it.
Frequently asked questions
What is total cost of ownership (TCO)?
It is everything the car costs you while you own it: depreciation plus fuel, insurance, tax and maintenance, spread over the years and kilometres you drive.
How is depreciation calculated here?
As a fixed percentage of the remaining value each year: value after N years = price × (1 − rate)^N. The difference from the purchase price is the depreciation cost.
What does cost per km tell me?
It turns all costs into one comparable number, so you can compare two cars, or a car with car-sharing and public transport, on the same basis.
