Lucid is an American maker of electric cars headquartered in Newark, California. It was founded in 2007 as Atieva by Bernard Tse, Sam Weng and Sheaupyng Lin, and was renamed Lucid Motors in October 2016. Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund, the Public Investment Fund, has been the majority shareholder since April 2019.
The company's first production car is the Lucid Air, a large electric luxury saloon. Production began at Lucid's factory in Casa Grande, Arizona, in September 2021, and the first deliveries followed that October. The second model, the Gravity, a large electric SUV, entered production in December 2024, extending the range beyond saloons. Lucid went public on Nasdaq in July 2021 through a merger with the special-purpose acquisition company Churchill Capital Corp IV. Peter Rawlinson led Lucid as chief executive from 2019 to 2025; Silvio Napoli was named chief executive in April 2026. See also Tesla and Rivian.
