Ineos Automotive is a British maker of off-road vehicles headquartered in London. It was founded in 2016 by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the chairman of Ineos, after Land Rover ended production of the original Defender in January 2016 and declined to sell its tooling. Ratcliffe wanted to build a successor to it.
The result is the Ineos Grenadier, an off-roader developed with Magna Steyr as technology partner and powered by BMW engines. A plant in Bridgend, Wales, was originally planned, but production began in October 2022 at the former Smart factory in Hambach, France. The range also includes the Quartermaster pickup. In October 2021 Ineos agreed a partnership with Hyundai Motor Group to develop a hydrogen fuel-cell Grenadier. A smaller electric or hybrid model, the Fusilier, was previewed in February 2024, but its production was cancelled in July 2024. Lynn Calder has been chief executive since December 2022.
